Superpages.com Center Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary Tonight

Obviously, tonight's 20th anniversary party at Superpages.com Center--a select event for "friends" of the venue and promotional co-sponsors, held right before tonight's Roger Waters show--celebrates the 20th birthday of the venue, not the name, which we openly mocked when it was announced earlier this year.

Anyone got any great memories to share? I'm still new to town, so the Kanye West show last night was my first experience. And yes, it was a great show, but it wasn't the venue that did it. I don't know, share 'em if you've got 'em.

Also: I couldn't help but further think about the Superpages.com Center name while writing up the Kanye review earlier. We abbreviate a lot of venue names around town (The Granada Theater is just the Granada; American Airlines Center is the AAC); is there a natural one for Superpages.com Center? Surely not just "Superpages.com." I told a friend I was going to "Superpages.com" for the Kanye show last night and he cocked his head curiously and asked if there was a webcast or something. Should it be "SP.CC"? Or just Starplex, as it once was?

Clearly, I over-think things.

In other news, Hotels.com just bought the naming rights to this blog. You can now access us at Hotelsdotcom.com. OK, not really. --Pete Freedman

I still call it Starplex. Nothing sentimental, it's just way easier to say.

If my co-conversant is new in town, sometimes I still call it Smirnoff! Because, really, who these days will use an eight-syllable name? We're way too lazy for that.

Yep, just Starplex.

I saw one of the Edgefests there (95-96ish), and my then-girlfriend got the crap beat out of her in the giant mosh pit up front for the Violent Femmes. It was really brutal, given that there really isn't a space for moshing up by the stage. People were climbing on top of and getting stomped underneath the front seats. Quite a spectacle, which I in my trepidation watched from the lawn.

The sound has always sucked, though. Most sound men have no idea what to do with that place. Half indoors, half outdoors, everything's all wonky. Only times I heard good sound there were Sting (also mid-90s) and, oddly, Roger Waters in 2000.

The Shed!

it ain't much to look at or be proud of, but it is next to Fair Park. the performers can watch the ferris wheel.
Great combos that shared the stage:
Jimmy Page with Jason Bonham, Tom Petty brought out Stevie Nicks,
Sheryl Crow brought out Gwyneth Paltrow
(wet dream come true) -
it's no Red Rocks but if the music's good enough, that's what counts.

Starplex Starplex Starplex - that's the name...always & forever.

A few memorable shows :

First Edgefest (Spring '92) - Pearl Jam was amazing. Crowd from the grass rushed down and overran security to get down to the front pit to watch them. Quite a scene to watch. Sugarcubes were also good.

David Bowie/NIN show (mid 90s). Dave & Trent were great, especially when they did 3 songs together - wow!

Funny memory - I remember when they actually ran the A/C to try and cool the crowd in the seats...what a joke. Like that would ever work.
The venue has never been great, and I attribute much of my hearing loss to that shed, but there have been some good shows there. Although, outdoor shows in Texas in the summertime should be outlawed - WAY too hot.

Ah, the Starplex days... people ripping up the lawn and throwing dirt at each other... setting bonfires and then giving themselves second-degree burns... and of course, the long lines for overpriced shitty beer...

Ryan says:

My fav show was Metallica in the early 90's. Starplex all the way.
