Observer Writer Jesse Hughey Named Clubs Editor

In case you missed his posting, Friday was Rich Lopez’s last day as the Dallas Observer’s clubs editor. Now that he is raking in the big bucks as a freelance writer and bookstore clerk, I have the formidable task of taking over for him.

That means club owners, music booking agents, promoters, musicians or anyone else who wants a music event listed on our web site or in our paper should send info about their event to me via email.

Read on if you’re as interested in me as I am:

I’ve been contributing to the music section for almost three years and three music editors.

The first was Sam Machkovech, who I impressed with some so-so clips coupled with the rare ability to spell his name correctly (a feat I was unable to duplicate with Transona Five, I admit).

Since then, I’ve written about little-known local and world-renowned musicians of all genres, with wildly varying ratios of expertise-to-ignorance. Features I’ve written include interviews with John Cale, John Prine, Blueprint, Angus Andrews of Liars, Nate Mendel of the Foo Fighters, PPT, Record Hop, Sorta and John Freeman.

Also, I’ve made up a bunch of bullshit and am astonished that Village Voice Media continues to condone my absurd and irresponsible lies.

I’ll continue writing for the music section, for DC9 and for the Night and Day section. Musicians, please keep sending me stuff. Even if it’s just a CD-R with your name written in Sharpie, I’ll give it a listen.

I’m indebted to my colleagues for recommending me and welcoming me into the funhouse. And to Rich, thanks for showing me the ropes talking me through problems over the phone. Adios y buena suerte, amigo. --Jesse Hughey
