Journey To Hell And Back...Without Steve Perry

...minus the second guy from the right.

Summertime is nearly upon us and that can mean only one thing: The annual parade of rock and roll has-beens coming through our area.

What’s worse is that most of these bands are missing key members, so fans are paying big bucks to see what is, ultimately, a tribute band. This year, we’re talking a smörgåsbord of late '70s dreck--admittedly popular dreck, but dreck nonetheless.

Boston/Styx hits Nokia on June 24 and then it’s the unholy trio of Cheap Trick, Heart and Journey late in July. Besides the logistics of getting a crane to hoist Ann Wilson on stage, Journey fans are going to be disappointed that lead singer Steve Perry has been replaced by one Arnel Pineda, a Perry sound-alike from the Philippines.

(Supposedly, guitarist and Journey co-founder Neal Schon found Pineda via Youtube and figured fans wouldn’t notice the difference. Pineda is the third vocalist to take Perry’s spot since the original singer left in 1998.)

But, unlike a lot of these oldies tours, Journey actually has a new CD to promote. It’s called Revelations, and it’s a three-disc CD and DVD package coming out June 3. One disc will be 11 Journey “classics” (with Pineda singing instead of Perry), the second disc will be all-new material and the third disc is a DVD from a recently filmed concert.

Which, well, all seems like a lot of overkill. How much Journey can a person stomach? --Darryl Smyers

You know what else qualifies as "dreck?" This post. And there is no reason for the mean-spirited cheap shot about Ann Wilson other than to be a frat-guy douchebag.

What was the fucking point of this? You guys can do better...

Laura F. says:

Dreck? What the dreck were you thinking when you wrote this post?

Just have to say that Cheap Trick is not some washed up, drecky tribute band. All four guys are the original band members. They put out a new CD in 2006 which got rave reviews and the band has said that another new CD is almost ready to be released. And they still put on an amazing live show.

Last August, Trick was the house band at the Hollywood Bowl in LA to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's. They sold out two nights, and did such an awesome job, they're doing the Sgt. Pepper's gig again at the Hollywood Bowl on June 28.

Your comment about Ann Wilson was just plain rude dude. Totally uncalled for.

Oh please says:

First of all, get your facts straight. Two of the members of the band's incarnation from the photo you display are missing. The guy on Perry's right is Steve Smith. He hasn't been the drummer in 10 years.

Perry is not the only personnel change Journey has gone through. In fact, he wasn't even the band's original singer. There were two others before him. Jonathan Cain isn't the original keyboard player. Steve Smith wasn't the original drummer. If you think real hard, you might remember that Randy Jackson of American Idol (yeah that guy) played bass for Journey for a year. Steve Smith wasn't with the band for that year either.

Finally, have you heard Arnel Pineda sing? Have you read all the rave reviews he's been getting? If not, get out of your basement and take a look around the internet. You might be surprised and wake up to realize the fans won't be disappointed at all.

Ken says:

I agree with you Danny, some people just can't be happy for anything. They have to put people down to lift them up. The new Journey guy is a find and he proved himself in Chile already.

ChrisU says:

It is too bad Cheap Trick gets lumped in with the nostalgia acts, but guess they gotta make a buck.
And the comment about Ann being hoisted by a crane is so wrong....her ascension to the stage would more likely involve some sort of hydraulic lift.

bruce says:

I actually saw a clip of the new singer in Journey. This time they found a young Philipino that sounds exactly like Steve Perry to replace the white guy that sounded and kinda looked like Steve Perry. Pretty bold, I'd say.

And it is kinda mean to make jokes about how Ann will get on the stage. Instead, we should hope that they fixed the glitch that allowed her to fly off into the night at the Roger Waters show.

The "young Filipino" (Arnel Pineda) is almost 41.

journey 4 ever says:

Arnel Pineda is the best thing that ever happened to Journey...Way to go AP...great voice...

STEVE PERRY...goodbye...you're done.

db in az says:

AP is very talented and I'm glad they've found someone that will allow them to continue to perform their hits live...BUT

HE'S NO STEVE PERRY...NOT EVEN CLOSE!

I've seen both live and, like I said Arnel is a very gifted singer, but SP was on a level all his own. I'll never forget seeing him do "Lay it Down" and "Mother Father" live.

Best of luck to the new line-up! BTW, when are they going to let Arnel try Mother Father or Still they Ride?

Alan Sims says:

I totally disagree with "journey 4 ever" . After their first four albums,Journey was going to be dropped by their label, Columbia Records. So this new singer Arnel, is not the best thing that has ever happened to Journey. The best thing that ever happened to the band is when Steve Perry came in and saved them. By the way, I though Steve Augeri was pretty good too, and he at least helped out on the songwriting. Anybody can join an already established group and be successful, let this Arnel character get his own band and write his own songs and then see if he can make it. He would fall flat on his face!!! You can count on that. Nuff said!! STEVE PERRY RULES!!!!
