Wait, who are these guys again?

There's one very obvious must-see in the cards this weekend... but it's not a bad one otherwise. Really! Here's your weekend...

Paul Slavens, Pet Hospital, Roy Ivy, Mike Graff
8 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at Club Dada

Really interesting bill tonight in Deep Ellum. Pet Hospital's a promising upstart we've written about before, Slavens is a Denton icon (and, uh, 90.1 KERA-FM DJ), Roy Ivy's in the Tah-Dahs, and...OK, I know nothing about the last guy except that his Myspace page seems to indicate an affinity for dude rock guitar licks. Other than that, it should be a cool show, though.

Dark Meat
4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Good Records

Sure, you could pay to catch Dark Meat at Lola's in Fort Worth tonight. Or you could save the gas money and see them play Good Records on Saturday for free. Doesn't matter which you go to. But, as Noah Bailey writes in this week's paper, you probably want to go to one of them.

Be Your Own Pet, Switches, She Wants Revenge, The Virgins
8 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at House of Blues

She Wants Revenge bores the crap out of me and The Virgins seems like lowest common denominator disco dance revival, but I actually like what I've heard of Switches. The London-based pop-rock act's not life-changing, but they're interesting enough to keep your attention until Be Your Own Pet takes the stage. The Nashville punk act who I wrote about in this week's paper is way out of the rest of this bill's league.

The Angelus, Tomorrowpeople, Sparklepussy Barbie
10 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at the Double-Wide

Technically, this is a headlining gig for The Angelus. Which is all fine and good--Emil Rapstine and Co. are fine musicians. But the big deal here is the re-emergence of the late '90s' Tomorrowpeople, as Robert Wilonsky tells us in this week's paper.

Shibboleth, Bobby Patterson
9 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Sons of Hermann Hall

Shibboleth's going big for its CD release party at Sons on Saturday, bringing Bobby Patterson into the festivities. While the celebration's obviously for the Shibboleth guys' release, don't be surprised if you hear some new songs from Patterson, too. It's no secret that the two acts have been working together on a new Patterson disc.

Radiohead, Liars
8 p.m. on Sunday. May 18, at Superpages.com Center

Like you need another reminder.

Japanther, The Pharmacy, Naxat
9 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at Rubber Gloves in Denton

We Aurally Ambushed some Dentonites up on the square earlier this week with Japanther's music in tow and we haven't been able to get the band's lo-fi pop-punk sound out of our heads since. If you can't make the Radiohead show, you could do a whole lot worse than this one.

Daniel Folmer, The Baptists Generals, Nick Foreman, Cody Robinson
7 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton

This show is yet another Denton option for the anti-Radiohead set. Surprisingly strong Sunday, huh? Anyway, this one's worth knowing about for a couple reasons. For starers, it's free--part of a new free music Sundays series going on up at Dan's. And, second, it's got a sweet little line-up. Nick Foreman's been making waves around town under the name of Dust Congress, Chris Flemmons of The Baptist Generals was recently deemed an "elder statesmen of sorts of Denton's music scene" by The New York Times, and Daniel Folmer's got a new disc to show off. So, that's reason a-plenty to see this show.

Well, if it were any other weekend. I'll be at Starplex... --Pete Freedman

The Granada is hosting some kind of semi-private Black Rebel Motorcycle Club thing on Sunday night too.

But you know where I'll be.

Liles says:

Did you really just refer to Mike Graff with the quote "I know nothing of the last guy except that his MySpace page seems to indicate an affinity for dude rock guitar licks...", and then imply that he is the weakest act on the bill at Club Dada tonight?

Jesus fucking Christ. Are you kidding? You're really the music editor of the Dallas Observer?

Pete, there's more to research that just dialing up a MySpace page. Mike Graff has been part of the Dallas music community for over 20 years - as a founding member of Course of Empire (three albums, numerous national tours, soundtrack album appearances and sold out shows at 1,000 capacity venues), and stints in Three On a Hill, Pleasure Club and Halls of the Machine. His new solo work is ambient and textural, anything but "dude rock". Are Brian Eno or William Orbit playing "dude rock guitar licks" now, too?

Graff is also a respected graphic artist who done dozens of amazing posters and album covers, including the "Dude, You Rock!" record jacket.

Do us all a favor, ok? Whenever you write anything, please have Wilonsky proofread it first.

Seriously. For your own good. This is getting embarrassing.

Thanks for helping clear up Mike Graff's identity for our readers, Jeff. I appreciate it.

Yes, Liles is back! Tell him, man.

choriZo says:

yO pf...
i dont think its the readers that need help

Paul says:

Don't let Liles get to you, Pete. Mike Graff may have some roots here, but he hasn't done anything of relevance in...well...a long time. Liles loves to revel in the days of yore, and remind everyone of how he was "there" - ad nauseam.

Sounds very "dude rock"ish to me too, by the way...

choriZo says:

what is relevance?

Liles says:

Pete, I want to apologize for both of my comments last week. In retrospect, I probably should have kept my mouth shut. Sometimes I tend to take this stuff way too seriously. I'm gonna leave you alone from here on out.

That said, there was a nice little feature on Mike Graff last week on The Sub Rosa blog, if anyone is interested:

Say it ain't so, Liles. Please don't leave him alone. We need your comments now more than ever.

Anonymous says:

Oh yeah, Liles, your comment on the Lil Wil thread was the best writing that's ever appeared on this blog.

hammertimez says:

paul- jeff made his point. it was an oversight and pete agreed. but as far as relevance goes...this is dallas. when an artist perseveres 20 years of a music scene (where the only working musicians are in cover bands) its relevant.

meanwhile, ron washington is gambling away his pinch hitting opportunities like it's a damn video poker game. wait, that's irrelevant. except it really isn't...to me.
