Gang of Four’s Now Back To A Gang Of Two
One of the best shows to hit the Gypsy Tea Room prior to its demise was the reformed Gang of Four in late 2005. The legendary post-punkers were together for the first time in their original incarnation since 1982 and blitzed the audience with classics such as “At Home He’s a Tourist” and “To Hell With Poverty.” Still ferocious on stage, the band was supposedly headed to the studio soon after to record a new effort. But only a single song has emerged in two years and now comes word that bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham are moving on from the band.
Allen’s blog states that he and Burnham are pursuing other interests and could no longer focus solely on Gang of Four. Sounds suspiciously like they once again hate each other’s guts, to me. The band’s on-line newsletter promises a new release sometime this year, but judging by the material singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill made the first time they recorded as a duo (anyone remember the travesty that was Hard?), this wonderful reemergence is depressingly ended. --Darryl Smyers
