Country Thunder USA in Waxahachie Cancels, Blames Everything Except The Music

Ain't nothing wrong with Carrie, Darryl.

Next weekend’s three day-Country Thunder USA Festival in Waxahachie has been abruptly cancelled.

Planned to take place May 30 though June 1, the event was to feature such acts as Pat Green, Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood, along with dozens of other local and national country acts. But a representative from the event tells me that ticket sales were “slow, slow, slow”--and then promptly referred me to Karen Tallier, a publicist out of Nashville.

Tallier was extremely friendly, but could not commit any further than “please read the press release.” According to said release, “The decision was based on several factors; a depressed economy, low ticket sales and the financial outcome of last year’s event after catastrophic rainfall and the cancellation of 70% of the artists.”

No word on refunds for those who already purchased tickets, but the press release lists 262-279-6960 as the number for the customer service center. The Country Thunder USA Organization (who knew?) says similar festivals in Wisconsin and Arizona will go on as scheduled. I guess folks in these locales appreciate country/pop a bit more than North Texans, which may speak to our area’s collective good taste. --Darryl Smyers
