James Dante Kings' Family Hires Law Firm, Looks For School Reforms

James Dante Kings was 17 years old.

It looks like it's going to be some time before anyone really knows what happened to James Dante Kings in the early morning hours of Friday, March 28.

Austin officials have yet to determine who it was that struck Kings on I-35; they also have no answer for what Kings was doing on the highway in the first place. And, it seems, no one has come out yet from Booker T. Washington High School to explain what went down in the hotel where the students were staying--although, according to this Morning News piece, it looks like James' father has some suspicions...

Based on his talk with a student who was socializing with James and other students in a hotel room the night of the death, Mr. Kings believes his son may have unknowingly been slipped a drug.

Meanwhile, the Austin American-Statesman reports that Kings' toxicology test results won't be ready for "several weeks."

Today's news, however, is even more intriguing. According to a press release, the Kings family has hired a law firm, Richardson's Modjarrad and Abusaad, to help investigate, and possibly litigate, James' case.

"It's not so much based on an economic standpoint," the law firm's marketing director John Watts tells DC9. "What we're looking for is reform. There has to be something in line where these kids are safe."

More details will be disclosed at a press conference--where Kings' family will be in attendance and prepared to answer questions--scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. in Richardson. And, to hear Watts tell it, this investigation is one all local families should pay close attention to:

"At some point in time," Watts says, "every kid is going to go on a field trip for school. It happens."

Friends and family said their final goodbyes to Kings, who, according to reports, was talented enough to receive a college scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music in New York without ever auditioning, on Saturday at the family's funeral service.

DC9 will attend tomorrow's press conference to let you know exactly what kind of reform--and what kind of action--the Kings family hopes to see come out of their efforts. -- Pete Freedman

This is a very disturbing event, because if he was somehow given a drug by a student that caused him to react in such a way that led to his death, wouldn't that student be on the hook for manslaughter or something like that?

Isn't 6 adullts per 24 high school students enough? I would think so.

Why wouldn't the austin police at least conduct phone interviews with the students? And let's not forget, Austin is only 3 hours away.

The whole situation is tragic.

Very sad that the words of one student in the room socializing...is taken as fact. Mr Kings is in great pain now over the loss of his son and desperate for answers. These rumors about his son being slipped a drug don't help. Plus kids in the room are threatened with suspension I suspect. A good bit of time has passed since the incident, with plenty of time for kids to decide what to say and be influenced by what others ARE saying. So getting to the 'truth' will be very, very difficult. From all accounts, James was obviously disturbed and that could have been over something completely apart from what was going on in the hotel room. We all have the potential to 'break' at the least likely moment in very unlikely places. James was in the room that night voluntarily. He had been in the room the night before voluntarily doing what all the other kids in the room were doing. This will all come out eventually. R.I.P. James Kings.

A Friend of James says:

This event is really a very sad way to end a school year. James Kings was an amazing person and its so hard to celebrate knowing that your friend won't be taking that next leap with you. However he is gone but certainly not forgotten we will all miss "King James". And as much as I would love to say lets just move on, something has to be done about this situation. Booker T. Washington HSPVA has a reputation of being the type of school where something like this would never happen but it did and I think that for this reason this is very much worthy of an investigation. I agree with Mr. Kings being desperate to find answers after all a parents worse nightmare is to be awaken by news that your son or daughter has passed away...and on a school trip of all things. The fact that it was a school trip makes this a district issue because (technically) its their responsibility to watch the students and although kids will be kids there are other disturbing issues at hand that they can control. Such as why is a "motel" like hotel where the doors open directly to the outside which just so happens to be located right off a major highway a DISD approved stay in the first place? (seriously this is just dumb)There are many hotels (not that much farther away) that are more contained. I mean how is it possible to monitor student activities when they can just simply walk out their front doors? and lets not forget how close they are to a major highway. The Second issue is that they should demand that chaperones search everyones bags before leaving on the trip. So really its not the just the chaperones fault as much as it is district, because they should have considered some of these things. Its not their fault but they are certainly responsible for some of this. If things were just more thought out and taken into consideration rather then just finding the inexpensive soulution I believe such a tragedy might not have occured but if it did at least they could better cover themselves. They left the door wide open for a lawsuit and its sad that this happened but it was a huge wake up call for students, teachers, parents and DISD administrators. The drugs issue is just a small part in the grand scheme of things that will eventually come out but DISD's lack of attention is the main point that I believe the Kings family is trying to draw attention to. Now let me clarify by saying that it is not one persons fault, I would never put that on anyone because accidents happen but its just the same as getting into a car accident someone has to be held responsible.
