Zane Lewis' "Southland": Hot or Not?

I know that Zane Lewis' modern country sound isn't exactly up most most of our readers' alley. Hell, it's not really up our alley, either (although I was, admittedly, a modern country apologist for a time in college...it's how I started to get into Gary Allan's music). But Lewis is a local musician and his track "Southland" is our pick of the best off of his new self-titled disc, which we clued you into last month when we mentioned his album release party.

Now, Lewis has three more shows in the (extended) area this weekend--a radio performance in Sulphur Springs tomorrow night, an afternoon in-store at Hastings in Greenville on Saturday and then a night show at The Drunken Mule in Commerce that same night--which is as good an excuse as any for us to finally post the short cut of "Southland" that he sent our way a few weeks back for you to download. So, here it is:

Zane Lewis -- "Southland"

Sounds like Trace Adkins meets Montgomery Gentry to me, which, if you've ever watch Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders on CMT--and I know you have--you know there's a market for.

But the question here lies in what exactly you guys think of the track. I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on this one. I'm sure Zane Lewis is, too, actually. -- Pete Freedman

'Modern Country Sound'? if that means it sounds like all the other clones on mainstream radio, yeah I agree. If you want real country (and rockin) sound from a local band:
1100 Springs.

ChrisU says:

....Eleven Hundred Springs. sorry

Fuel injected country, with a high octane performer. It's what country has been looking for. Great job! Keep the hits coming.

trip says:

Yes, eleven (1100 whatever) WAS so mediocre that I too am having trouble remembering how they spell their name! Apparently you have some sort of bias due, because I don't normally listen to country but I loved Zane Lewis' new album! I mean, it's got killer guitar solos, catchy hooks, GREAT producing, this IS the new rock n roll man, or country, or whatever you want to call it, I love it, which is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY more than I could say for my feelings on 1000 Springs, or whatever that address was...

Casey Eldon says:

Sounds like country grew some.

PJ Miles says:

Keep em coming Zane. Your da man!

Cheri says:

Too many times the CD might be good, but the live show isn't. I'm happy to say that it isn't true in this case. BOTH the CD and the show are incredible. High energy and really fun to watch. You can tell everyone in the band is having a great time and love what they're doing. Catch them as soon as you can - you won't be sorry!
My favs - "Fly", "Bad Ass Country Band" and "Southland".
Thanks Zane!

Jerry says:

Caught Zane's gig in Brownwood Texas last weekend. Full of energy with great song selections, many written by Zane Lewis. Keep'em coming. Can't wait for the next cd. Worth the trip from Carlsbad NM.

RockinBob says:

8th Grade lyrics, the typical Nashville crap out of the studios, no distinction between this music and anything else. When someone can come out with intelligent lyrics and have a sound that separates them from someone else it will be worth listening to. Miranda Lambert, Jack Ingram are good examples. Come back Zane when you have something unique.

RockingBob says:

By the way, Trip's comments above are nice since he plays in Zane's band. Speaking about the the 1100 Spring's commenter being biased!

Evea Helmberger says:

Zane Lewis and band have a very distinct and unique sound. Some CD's sound great- but when you hear the performer in person, you are disappointed. Zane sounds even better on stage live with his band- he is the real deal. When he sings about the "Southland", he knows what he is talking about! He embodies the Southland. Thank God for someone who is genuinely talented and singing about things he knows and lives, not things he's only heard about. Zane Lewis is a pumped up country band with deep country roots and influences. I'd rather hear them on the radio than most of the other same ol' same ol'. His music does what music is supposed to do...make you feel good with a little nostalgia thrown in. Rock on country style!

Jim says:

Hahah, seriously? Bob got fired from their band and has since been replaced for being an "inadequate player." Talk about biased! I'm sorry, talk about "rockin biased." You both need a life and some non-ridiculous names... you guys worked really hard for this and I hate to see both these guys cheapen that, good work.

rockinbob says:

RockinBob got fired? That's funny! He quit 3 times and the last time was the final straw! He has emails to indicate his resignation. Inadequate? Funny Bob got asked back all 3 times. Jim must be Dave the lead player for Zane. You might want to read the law about "Liable".
