The five guys in Every Time I Die don't take themselves seriously. I don't mean that they make joke music, but that they realize live shows are about fun. Often times hard- and metalcore bands are too busy looking tough on stage to truly enjoy the show. The members of ETID spent the entirety of the show bounding about the stage, thrusting their instruments in the air, headbanging, stage diving and interacting with the fired-up crowd. Hell, by the second song guitarist Jordan Buckley was pretending to punch himself in the face and once ETID launched into the third song he launched himself a good five feet into the pit with guitar in hand.
Vocalist Keith Buckley (yeah, Jordan's brother) laid on the Texas love intermittently throughout the show. Before playing “Kill the Music” he chimed out: “The stars are big and bright...” to which the crowd responded “deep in the heart of Texas!” Turns out the band filmed the video for its latest single, “We'rewolf,” around the corner from Dallas' House of Blues (or so sayeth Keith).
In addition to keeping full enthusiasm for the entire set, ETID treated its fans to songs from earlier in its career. “Flooter” from 2003's Hot Damn! was particularly well received. (Maybe the help from opening bands' vocalists helped promote the extra cheers.) I saw the band perform “Flooter” back when that album had just come out, and last night ETID looked to love playing the song just as much. That said, hearing “Pigs is Pigs” and “Cities and Years” from the recently released The Big Dirty -- and hearing those around me sing along – solidified the thought that ETID is doing something right. -- Chelsea Ide
Critic's Notebook
Personal Bias: I happen to own three – maybe four – Every Time I Die albums.
Random Moment: As ETID's energy fueled the crowd, a tight-knit pit formed near the stage. I was surprised to the scores of scrawny kids in the pit holding their own against a single big, bald man in a black beater.
By The Way: ETID is the headlining band on the Take Action Tour. The show also featured The Bled, The Human Abstract and August Burns Red. The tour has three more Texas dates.
