Literally Rocking The Vote

The crowd at Obama's rally. (Brian Harkin)
As all of us music snobs know, the true make of a person (and that includes candidates) is what music they listen to. Therefore, I offer you some selections piped through the speakers at both Obama’s and Clinton’s rallies. Choose wisely, in the primaries, peeps—some tunes may inundate the winning candidate’s campaign commercials March to November.

Hillary Clinton – Zang Blvd. parking lot in Oak Cliff - February 22

“Desire” - U2
“American Girl” - Tom Petty
“Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” - The Police
“Suddenly I See” - KT Tunstall
“Shining Star” - Earth, Wind and Fire
“Who's Says You Can't Go Home?” - Bon Jovi
“Blue Sky” – Big Head Todd & the Monsters
a song that I swear was Chris Rea, but was too far away to hear actual lyrics.

Barack Obama - Reunion Arena - February 20

“Hold On I'm Comin'” - Sam & Dave
“Walk Tall” - John Mellencamp
“City of Blinding Lights” - U2
“(Your Love Keeps Liftin' Me) Higher and Higher” - Jackie Wilson
“I'll Take You There” - The Staple Singers
“American Land” - Bruce Springsteen

Seems innocuous on both sides—accessible tracks for the most part. Both have irritatingly literal as well as ass-shakin’ elements with Hillary spanning more pop and Obama more soul. U2 brings the relatively similar candidates together (good ol’ Bono). But what? No Old 97’s? No Bobby Patterson? Nothing from the shitloads of music Dallas has to offer? C’mon Dems, maybe get an intern to do a little regional research on the bus between stops. I’m just sayin’. -- Merritt Martin
