Zara Commits on Fashion Detox Campaigned by Greenpeace

Last November, Greenpeace reported Zara as the eighth brand to commit on full elimination by 2020 of environmental discharges of harmful chemicals within its supply chains. This response by Inditex, the parent company of Zara, is commendable for it was made as soon as the report by the environmental organization went out into the public.

zara1.jpgMost people were surprised with the issue and found it a downfall to the name Zara has now been recognized with. Especially those people nearby the factories of the supply chains of Zara, they were then very much affected and worried about themselves finding out about the possible danger the chemicals might cause.

Though there was this stigma on the part of both Inditex and Zara, however, it is but necessary to consider that the abrupt response has still lifted the image of the fashion retailer. Zara, being the biggest fashion retailer, has been coined to be the most innovative as well. Therefore, it must find its way out of this defame or better, out of the eyes of many critics and environmentalists.

On the one hand, even Martin Hojsik, the Greenpeace Detox International Coordinator, claimed that other brands like Victoria's Secret, Gap, and Esprit must not make excuses and start detoxing as what their customers have also been campaigning. They must all commit now before they can be specifically named and customers start rallies in front of their gates and stores.

Zara's commitment followed the seven sports brands that were also reported by Greenpeace having the need to detox. This pollution elimination campaign of Greenpeace was specifically responded by Inditex by ordering 20 of its supply chains to issue reports starting March of next year, 2013, indicating the pollution data and sending these to the community nearby each of their area. By the end of 2013, almost 200 of its suppliers will be issuing the same report. This way, the length of the elimination time line that the company is allotting is even as shorter. This way, Inditex and Zara is currently getting thumbs up for their efficient answer to the problem.

Above all, the concern of most people centers on the health of the majority of individuals. So as soon as possible, every brand, clothing or perfume, must come to think of solutions to the damage each of their hazardous chemicals can cause. This way, not just the aesthetics and the class of their products can be appreciated by the public, but also their concern to the health of the individuals nearby their supply chains and the environment they are slowly damaging.
