Vandals Tipped, Busted and Stole from Pecan Lodge's Iconic Cow Last Night

Not cool
Terrible news in Deep Ellum, at the newly minted Pecan Lodge. Last night, a few youngsters thought they'd take up some bovine gymnastics before their antics quickly turned into a game of urban cow tipping. What may have initially been a harmless stunt became an act of vandalism, and now Huevos the bull needs to be put down.

Owner Justin Fourton says one of his morning employees was first to discover the damage. Fourton then examined the security tape and reconstructed the crime. Apparently the youngsters were walking along the fence that frames the patio, and one sneaked under the fence and mounted the bull. It was over in a matter of seconds.

Instead of riding the animal astride as most bull wranglers do, the vandal jumped to his feet and stood on the animal's back. When that wasn't enough, he proceeded to tiptoe toward the beast's head, as if he was riding a long board off the shores of Costa Rica. That's when poor Huevos came crashing down. The damage was permanent.

Huevos lost a horn, which was apparently stolen. He also lost a leg, and Fourton says he won't survive. Deep Ellum has been trying to shake its reputation as a rough part of town while Elm Street undertakes a massive renovation. This act of vandalism has dealt the neighborhood a blow, and Pecan Lodge will never be quite the same again.

we walked past that thing on our way to Kettle Gallery. Ella (5), my daughter, commented on it saying "there's a longhorn....Texas coooow.....daddy are longhorns real?" right after we had passed a large group of guys sitting on the corner across from curtain club. Why they weren't in the patio w everyone else is perplexing. Seemed to be of the same crowd, who knows, gave off a tense vibe. We left at 10:38 , we didn't notice anyone messing w da bull, or a bull down.........but I bet.....................those same guys (who were still there as we left) that were not in the patio (maybe too young?) got restless .

Hey, as long as they didn't damage the most important part of the cow, the brisket, it's still good!

I have been late getting to the party as only checked it out yesterday for the first time.  The ribs were good, pulled pork just so so and the brisket very mediocre.  It was late in the day (2ish) so maybe that was a reason.  The service was nice, my slaw totally zero, my friends mac & cheese very good.  I will eventually go back as many have commented, any restaurant can have an off day.

@TheCredibleHulk

  • Cow: a mature female bovine that has given birth to at least one or two calves. Colloquially, the term "cow" is also in reference to the Bos primigenius species of domestic cattle, regardless of age, gender, breed or type. However for most people who work with or raise cattle, this term is not used in the same reference as previously noted.

  • Bull: a mature, intact (testicles present and not removed) male bovine used for breeding purposes.

  • Steer: a male bovine (or bull) that has been castrated before reaching sexual maturity and is primarily used for beef.

  • Stag: a male bovine (or bull) that has been castrated after or upon reaching sexual maturity and is primarily used for beef, but can and is also often used as a "gomer bull" for detecting cows and heifers in heat.

  • Heifer: a female bovine (often immature, but beyond the "calf" stage) less than 1 to 2 years of age that has never calved. Such females, if they've never calved beyond two years of age may also be called heiferettes.

  • Bred Heifer: a female bovine that is pregnant with her first calf.

  • First-calf Heifer or First-calver: a female bovine that has given birth to her first calf, and is often around 24 to 36 months of age, depending on the breed and when she was first bred.

  • Ox (plural: Oxen): a bovine that is trained for draft work (pulling carts, wagons, plows, etc.)This is a term that primarily refers to a male bovine that has been castrated after maturity. However, an ox can also be female bovine (cow or heifer) or even a bull that has been trained for the same purpose. In the Biblical times, an ox was a general term used, just like with the term "cows," to a domesticated bovine regardless of age, gender, breed, type, or draft purposes.

  • Calf (plural: Calves): an immature bovine (male and female) that is reliant on milk from its dam or from a bottle in order to survive and grow. A calf is known as such from birth to around 10 months of age.

  • Bull calf: an immature intact male bovine (since all males are born with testes) that is reliant on milk from his dam or a bottle for growth and survival.

  • Steer calf: an immature male bovine that has been castrated a few days to a couple months after birth, and is reliant on milk from his dam or a bottle for growth and survival.

  • Heifer calf: an immature female bovine that is reliant on milk from her dam or a bottle for growth and survival.

  • Freemartin: an infertile or sterile heifer or heifer calf. Such infertility is a result of being maternally twinned with a bull calf which placental tissues were shared in the womb. During the first trimester, reproductive organs start to form and sexual hormones begin to be produced in the fetus. When male and female fetal calves are twinned together, the testosterone produced by the male inhibits estrogen production in the female. This results in abnormal, underdeveloped or hermaphroditic reproductive organs in the female fetus. This is not so for the male. Freemartins are sometimes referred as "hermaphrodites" if they are born with reproductive organs of both genders. As a result, these type of freemartins tend to develop secondary male sexual characteristics (muscular crest over neck, wide forehead, etc.) upon reaching puberty.

  • Cattle: general plural term for more than one bovine

  • Cattlebeast / bovine / animal: a singular term for a bovine whose gender cannot be determined, particularly when viewed at a distance. Most people like to call a bovine of unknown (or "unknown") gender as a "cow," simply because it is a much more well-known and popular term to use than "bovine" or "cattlebeast." This, however, is often not the case around experienced cattlemen and cattlewomen or "ranchers" (as some like to call them) who never use the term "cow" when referring to a bovine that is anything but a cow. "Animal," "critter," "creature," or any other term, coarse or not, are most often used over the colloquial word "cow."

@crford1 It's almost like your tastebuds don't work. Have you checked to see if they're still intact?

@bigjondaniel @crford1 Probably a prolific yelper.  Ive heard 2 complaints ever about Pecan Lodges food.  Now if you want to bitch about the wait, thats fair game, but thats what a good bbq joint line looks like

@bigjondaniel Yeah, you seem to be.  You can take 30 seconds and click on that handsome picture of me and then click on "View Profile" and you can easily see my comment history.  Only been a member for about a month, and no trolling there....  Their BBQ sucked, it's as simple as that

@gavin.cleaver @crford1 I don't think they are any more.  Maybe we went on a bad day, but brisket that is tough as nails that tastes like it was soaked in kerosene is not what I would consider award winning.

@ScottsMerkin @bigjondaniel @crford1 Get ready for the third complaint... I finally braved the line but made the mistake of ordering a BBQ sandwich - brisket and bread, how hard can it be? Well, that sandwich sucked. I've had better BBQ out of a microwave. Apparently, the sandwich meat is basically just scraps of fat and other brisket junk that would not look nice on a plate. It was freaking terrible. The worst part about the experience - I still don't know if their brisket is any good since what was on that sandwich I would not consider actual brisket.

If there is a next time, I will just get straight up brisket and some rolls and make my own damn sandwich.

@crford1 @bigjondaniel I posted a comment about The Free Man having lousy food and the owner himself responded calling me butt hurt, accused me of being another local business owner that had been trying to steal his employees. It was a trip! I had a nice laugh at that one!

@crford1 @gavin.cleaver Yeah, every place has an off-day. Depends on what time of day you go too - running an all-day BBQ restaurant is a very different prospect to running a lunch joint.

@ScottsMerkin His review instantly became worthless when he said that he ordered a sandwich. Who the fuck goes to a beloved bbq place and orders a sandwich? That's like going to a great Italian place and ordering fucking spaghetti.

@crford1 @ScottsMerkin @gavin.cleaver You really should give it a go again.  I had a bad first experience with the Slow Bone, but subsequent visits have been good.  Ive never had this terrible experience at Pecan Lodge.  Now that new 1050 place, umm that left a lot to be desired but ill give it a go again in a couple of months
