100 Favorite Dishes, No. 55: The Nachos at Spiral Diner

Yes, better than non-vegan nachos (and they even have beer)
To prepare for this fall's Best of Dallas® 2014 issue, we're counting down (in no particular order) our 100 Favorite Dishes. If there's a dish you think we need to try, leave it in the comments, or email me.

When a reader recommended I head to Spiral Diner to try out "The Mitch," I was happy to oblige. There's not a lot of vegan fare to be found on out 100 Favorites dish list, and I'm always looking for a way to shave a few points off my cholesterol score.

"The Mitch," if you haven't had the pleasure, is a vegan club sandwich, filled with slices on soft tofu, texturized bacon-bit-somethings, lettuce and tomato. It's not a bad sandwich and if you've been forced into veganism but it's not a club. At all.

To console myself, I ordered the nachos, which I read about right here on CoA a few months ago. Luke Darby traveled the city looking for nachos and declared these the tastiest nachos on his Nachodyssey. Usually when we're trying to replace a food thing that's terrible for us, the best we can hope for is a modest percentage. To have a vegan counterpart actually usurp the beef and cheese covered variety? This is unheard of.

The cheese-like substance you see is actually cashews blended with bell peppers and spices, which actually mimics nacho cheese pretty well. As a bonus, it's not greasy at all, and it doesn't eat like liquid cement. The olives, quinoa and black beans are a satisfying substitute for chili and refried beans, and the plate eats like your favorite bar snack with none of the guilt.

There are no televisions, so you can't watch sports while you face-surf this plate, but beer and nachos on their own aren't bad. Next time you're craving nachos (and not sports), try the vegan option.
