Club Schmitz Is Dead

So long, farewell, and what a bummer.
The Scoop Blog reported moments ago that Club Schmitz, the beloved Dallas dive bar located on Old Denton Road, will close its doors forever on the last day of May. The news will undoubtedly sadden countless barflies and Dallas-style-burger fanatics.

Of course, news of the closing does not come as a surprise. One month ago today news broke that the neighboring RaceTrac gas station had its eye on the land where Club Schmitz has stood for the past 68 years. At that time the RaceTrac folks were conducting a feasibility study and only planned on making an offer for the land if the numbers came out right. Apparently, the numbers came out right, so it's goodbye dive bar and hello extra parking and gasoline pumps.

Of course that means owners Larry and Bob Schmitz will receive a sizable check, and they say they plan on doing something next with the money. But they say not to expect another Club Schmitz in the future in the DMN interview.

Even if they did try to rebuild the bar on the other side of town it would never be the same. Dive bars are just like people. They're born, they age and build character, and then they age a bit more and start to wither before they die. Schmitz has been in the sweet spot for years now, a lot like Ships and The Goat over in East Dallas. Those dive bars will eventually die someday, too. They all do.

Just now reading about CS.  So sad to hear this.  Haven't gone there are much as I did in the 80's but when I do get the chance, I have the burger, fries, a couple of cold ones and play shuffleboard on the warped board and some pool on the "need new felt" table.  I'll make it there soon before they close.

I have a good friend in his mid 50's who delivered beer to Schmitz when he was in high school at Irving Nimitz.

Wonder what Sylvia's gonna do now?  Truck stop waitress legend.  She was my waitress the first time I went there in the 70's, and the last time I went there a couple of months ago.  She's been there as long as the beer signs.

A shame, but all things must pass. My family's been going there for 55 years. My dad once re-asphalted their parking lot with recycled composition shingle strips back in the '60's. He had a small business on the side doing that. Not a good idea, if I remember right. The strips blew away. I used to play on the huge aim-able artillery pieces in front of the USMC Reserve station across the street while my dad was in the bar. I'd aim a 155mm Howitzer at the place, and at passing cars, pretending to be an artillery gunner in WWII. Great memories!

Another shame:  That Race Trac is the WORST! Dirty, poorly maintained, badly managed. Pumps never wiped down, windshield washing stations rarely have soapy water and squeegees, trash seldom emptied, etc. They need to shrink, not expand!

The older I get the more I appreciate dank ceilings and sticky floors.

The smoking law put a big hurt on their business years ago.  Then came years of construction on the light rail, right on top of them making it difficult to access the parking lot.  What a shame.  I'm going next week for one last Double-Double and an ice-cold beer.

The trend line in Lakewood retail is going up and will force The Goat out...sadly, but unlike the owners of Club Schmitz, the Goat owners do not own their real estate and won't benefit....Lakewood retail is undergoing a major transition with tenants moving out of Lakewood proper and into the Gaston Road area.  Cane Rosso proved that it is a viable location.  Rental rates are skyrocketing and it will only continue as Lincoln Property builds their new center and attracts national tenants who can pay substantially more in rent.

@CitizenKane  We destroy the things we love. We use them to the point that we price them out of the very niche that we so crave.  Love is ultimately death.

Does anyone have a Lone Star can I can take a knife to?
