The Dallas Observer's Iron Fork Is Back, with a New Chef Battle, New Venue and More

How much for just one rib?
It's time to start thinking about this year's Iron Fork competition. On May 7, Matt McCallister will have to defend the title he won last year in the sweltering confines of the Dallas Contemporary against Scott Romano. His next challenger is Richard Gras, the chef that recently took charge of Oak, and the epic battle will once again be overseen by Kent Rathbun.

This year's event will be held at 333 First Avenue, the spacious multi-level venue that played host to our Artopia event in January. It's simple: Each chef will receive a basket of ingredients, including one secret ingredient. It's up to them to battle for the glory of the coveted Iron Fork award -- no spatula spanking allowed.

This whole charade is, of course, just an excuse to get you in front of scores of area restaurants who plan on bringing an absurd amount of food to the party. Expect table after table of small plates that allow you to travel from one restaurant to the next in the amount of time it takes you to wipe your chin. You can also expect beer wine and cocktail sampling in addition to live music.

Tickets go on pre-sale Tuesday, March 25th at 10:00am at Ticketfly (use code CityofAte) and can be purchased for $35 until April 23. There's also a VIP option for $65 that gets you access an hour early, a few extra tasting opportunities and valet parking. After April 23, prices start climbing until the day of the event when general admission will set you back $55, and VIP $90.

Article indicates pre-sales starts Tues March 25th but event says they start Mon March 31st. Which is correct?


What is the HVAC situation at the new venue?  The temp at last year's event chased us out early.  Also, will there be additional wine options this year?  Pretty slim pickings last year.
