Deep Ellum Brewing Is Sticking with its Controversial Dallas Blonde Slogan After All

DEBCBlondesInCans.jpg
Last year, Deep Ellum Brewing Company found itself being hit with some pretty steep charges. After posting a photo on Facebook of a new delivery van that advertised the brewery's Dallas Blonde Ale, some writers and activists, myself included, accused the brewery of sexism, and even of promoting rape culture, with the slogan they used to sell the beer: "Goes Down Easy."

Brewery owner John Reardon soon issued an apology of sorts, promising to remove the slogan from the van. He maintained that the company would be keeping "Goes Down Easy" on individual cans of Dallas Blonde:

While I strongly reject the notion that this campaign promotes rape culture, I do admit the double entendre. Unfortunately, double entendres are only funny when they're out of the spotlight.

With that, I'll be removing the slogan from the van. Putting it on a can is one thing, but on the side of a van, where it's impossible to ignore, is another issue entirely.

Except, he didn't.

At Burnt Orange Report, Genevieve Cato, one of the original critics of the van, pointed out this morning that the "rape culture van is still rolling." According to Cato, a reader sent in a photo of the hot-pink van that is still delivering beer to liquor stores and restaurants in DFW.

I reached out to Reardon for comment, and he responded by email. "When weighing the decision on whether or not to change the van, we ultimately listened to the general public," he wrote. "We had an outcry of support in favor of not cowering to an overly PC agenda. At the end of the day, it's a beer. That goes down easy. End of story."

He's certainly right about that "outcry of support." Most of the comments on the DEBC Facebook page after the controversy indicated that their fans didn't really have a problem with "Goes Down Easy" as a slogan for Dallas Blonde Ale.

Reardon didn't explain why they'd changed their minds so quietly. If the customer base was so supportive of the slogan, why not make a big show of bucking the PC Police? Either way, the Dallas Blonde delivery van (and the brewery) rolls on.

When people say "lighten up" etc. regarding bigotry, sexism, racism, etc... This is what they are really saying--

"i'm really set in my ways, probably due to fear. I'm not smart enough to have an intelligent discussion about this topic, so I shall try to shame you in to not feeling 'cool enough' and hopefully shut you up so my mind does not have to open one bit"

Hey peanut gallery.. (99% men as far as I can tell..) Are there really NONE of you who have mothers, daughter, wives, etc who can grasp a small amount of empathy for how BEATEN IN TO THE DAMN GROUND sexist advertising is?? Are you really all so threatened that you can't contemplate, "Yeah, I guess it's not 100% cool to sexualize women as a way to advertise beer." (Or anything for that matter.) DEBC isn't the worst offender by a long shot, but FFS, why are you all so fearful of this IDEA that some people are OVER this particular genre? It's not objectifying YOU, so maybe, ummm calm down and consider the other side before you start whipping out your dick in protest and swearing that all the "feminazis" are taking away all that is fun in life. At the end of the day you come off as wayyy too threatened and insecure by the notion that straight white males are not the only humans deserving of respect without being told to "calm down." PS- While I don't agree that DEBC is propagating rape culture, I am totally convinced none of you know what the actual definition of Rape Culture is.

Good for DEBC.  These Fake feminists expect everyone to run and hide everytime they cry and use made up words like rape culture.   The people wasting their time complaining about this are a small minority and if you stand up to their bullshit, they will go away.

Geez are all you guys on your periods? Calm down and have a beer! It's her opinion, damn.

I don't drink beer, but I keep a beverage fridge in my garage, usually stocked with a case of Heineken or Amstel Light for my buddies/their wives/guests who DO prefer a cold beer. This man's beer (DEBC) shall hereafter and for eternity occupy that shelf space. Don't care if it's 5 times more expensive. Nice to see there are still Men who haven't become politically correct, sitcom-beta-femmes who cower in fear of controversy and the slightest disapproval from the women in their lives.

Why don't you target D Magazine, or even your own Back Page? Seems like hookers and boob job doctors, and strip clubs, can get away with advertising without any mention of "rape culture" or the objectification of women, but a beer can gets your panties all twisted.  If you don't like it, then don't drink it, plain and simple. AND BTW..CRY SOME MOAR!

Am I wrong, or does the term rape mean the exact opposite of "goes down easy"?  Christ almighty, you'd think their slogan was "goes down fighting, if you pull her hair and push her head toward your crotch hard enough"

You can be offended if you'd like, but quit throwing around the term "rape culture".  That offends me.

I was never into rape culture before, but thanks to this article and those complaining about it, I guess I am!  Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction!

There is much more to give DEBC shit over than this sorta clever little slogan.

In this story: people who have far too much time on their hands to get offended over random crap and say it somehow teaches people to rape.

Sexual stereotypes are usually only funny to those they are not aimed at. Hence the strong defense of this vapid frat boy slogan by dudes and "COOL chicks who GET it!!" I do think the reference to DEPC promoting rape culture is extreme. The ad is, however, sexist by definition. So if it bothers you, don't support the brewery. If it doesn't-- drink up. But why get so irritated about people calling out sexism in the media? Don't most intelligent people agree by now it's NOT a good thing for society?

"Goes down easy" is as innocuous as "that's what she said". I suppose The Office is a big part of "rape culture" as well.

The PC crowd will never support craft beer.  To them, beer is rape, because beer leads to friendliness which leads to sex, and sex is rape to them.

I like beer.  I like sex.  I like DEBC.

I do not like the people behind this attempted shaming.  There is no shame in beer, sex, or DEBC.

@glennMagz  When people say "lighten up" etc regarding whatever subculture hysteria, this is what they are really saying --

"You are embarrassing yourself.  No sane person believes any of what you are saying, and thinks much less of you for the emotional spectacle you are creating.  You are doing nothing but damaging your own standing in the community, and this is the nicest way I can try to talk you down off this cliff before you jump off into complete fruitcake land."

@WhiskeyJane I do consider the other side, considering that I'm responsible for the health, security, and well-being of a number of women and girls who share my last name. Beer ads only trouble the troubled. Persons of intellect, substance, and emotional maturity pay them little or no mind. If they disagree with an advertising campaign, they merely buy a different product. Fight sex trafficking, or something real. Rape Culture is a phrase that has no meaning whatsoever. It's just a way for you and others to feel aggrieved, and for some people, that hits the nucleus accumbens of the brain in the same way a hit of cocaine does. Though it might make you feel good to get twisted up over a beer ad, in the long run it will render you a dysfunctional human being.

@WhiskeyJane Perhaps the "feminazis" shouldn't use the term "rape culture" every time they run across something they don't like. Unless of course you contend that they are the sole interpreters of what is and isn't "rape culture".

@WhiskeyJane Maybe I don't know the actual definition of rape culture. But I do know that rape couture has some of the most ornate whistles that I have ever seen.

@smoothoperator  As your penis actually shrinks and trembles at the thought of *WOMEN* gasp- taking a stand against sexism.... So SCARY and threatening for MEN to actually contemplate empathy and understand how detrimental sexism is. So hard for your pea-brain to grasp... Hope you don't procreate with your ass backwards views.

@G_David  To feminazis, ALL heterosexual sex is rape (and most homosexual sex too.)  Seriously.  Read their literature.  SInce it's all based on coercion and power inequalities (because of PATRIARCHY!!!!!11!) that means all sex is rape.

That is why any mention of sex, no matter how double the entendre, is "rape culture".

smoothoperator

@WhiskeyJane

My daughters are healthy, brilliant, and well-adjusted, thank you. And just to prove I'm quite out of step with mos trends in modern culture, I'm still married to their mom. And no one has ever accused my penis of shrinking in or from anything but frigid water. You'll need to bait a different sort of man than I with penis-size taunts if you want results. "Sexism" doesn't mean whatever you say it means, dear. I assume that you are about 14 years old, (or have been rendered a permanent emotional teenager by circumstances beyond your control) and life has not yet taught you to govern your emotions, and that not everything that you "feel" is actually so.

If you want to get a look at rape culture, head for Southern and Western Africa. There, rape is used as a tool of social control and intimidation, in many cases with the sanction of whatever passes for local authority. Beer advertising that employs a double entendre, that may cause someone to snicker a bit is not the same as that. Blaming rape victims, authorities who fail to take sexual violence seriously, men who raise sons that don't respect women as anything other than sex objects, those are problems. However, this is not any of those things and it bears no relation to any of those things.

The Puritans had nothing on you strident, feminist, all-sex-is-rape types. Of course, they had to worry about surviving in a hostile world that had to be hacked and hewn into submission before it would produce enough food and shelter to sustain them. That fact rather tends to reduce their culpability for being so awfully tedious about everything. You, on the other hand, likely have no excuse other than that you majored in Womyn's Studies at college, and all you learned there was how to shout people down that disagreed with you. And of course that all sex is rape.
