The Loon Is Moving to Make Room for CVS, But Not Before a Proper Goodbye

Hopefully these tacos stay the way they've always been after The Loon changes locations.
Yesterday morning news broke that The Loon is looking for a new location. One of the most revered bars in Dallas is being pushed aside to make room for a CVS.

While the relocation is sad news for anyone who's spent any time at the decades-old bar, I was secretly, if momentarily, delighted: I had a reason to order some delicious tacos. The Loon has a reputation for drinks that hit customers like a hammer, but it should be celebrated for its tacos dorados, or tacos fritos as they're spelled out on the menu.

While I sat at the bar and sipped on a can of beer, owner Cliff Gonzales told me why he was getting the boot. By the end of May, the strip mall that houses a Subway, Qdoba and a handful of other businesses will be emptied, razed and then replaced by a massive CVS, despite there being a Walgreens just a block away. Two massive drug stores will exist within a pill bottle's throw from each other; Uptowners will never have to wait in a line to buy condoms again.

Gonzales says he's considering four or five new locations. And while he plans on staying in the neighborhood, the bar itself could change considerably. "You'll never be able to duplicate what's been here for this long," he said, pausing to scan the room. "It's taken on a character of its own."

Enough character that a proper send off is in order, though Gonzalez isn't sure what he'll do, or when. (He has to be out by the end of May.)

"Let's just have a big party," he said. "Maybe two or three of them."

My tacos arrived as he spoke, so I ended the interview. I have priorities. Lots of things are certain to change at The Loon in the coming months and I hope these tacos aren't one of them.

The Loon has always been a hole in the wall but attracts a lot of heavy drinkers which generates a lot of cash. Moving to a new location will be the worst mistake Cliff can do. In all honesty, some customers will follow but the majority will not. You had a long good run. Best of Luck.

Wait, isn't there a CVS literally RIGHT down the street from here?

Losing the Loon is a large hit for Uptown, not just because it's an iconic "dive" bar, but because it ushers in the almost total gentrification of Uptown. The Subway, Qdoba, and other small businesses in that shopping center may not be as beloved as the Loon, but they make for a "local feel", a neighborhood ideal that Uptown has very little of. Losing that to a giant pharmacy chain is like losing a small-town store to Wal-mart. With an existing Walgreen's AND Albertson's pharmacy within spitting distance, another chain drugstore on that corner is really a waste of space and a detriment to the whole neighborhood. Of course CVS will do business, of course things change, but damn.

First rate burgers and decent pizza.  Alessio used to cook there for a while and the specials were way beyond bar food.

They could have been original and opened something we don't have enough of. A Chase Bank.

there is no other bar in Uptown like this one. nothing pretentious but always popular. I didn't think the Loon would survive the smoking ban but did, so ya never know.

Great, what we need is more CVS's, Dickeys, Subways and Starbucks; I'm so glad I'm not chained down by this economy.....poor frickin' kids/youngsters these days!!  No wonder they are so fat, you "cain't" eat fast food for every meal.

This is a bummer.. because what that area needs is another CVS.. to go with the one down the street on Lemmon.. and the Walgreens also on Lemmon.. and also on Cedar Springs. Ugh.

Hopefully the future location has some more restrooms. On a busy night it took planning 30m ahead for when you'd have to piss. A patio wouldn't hurt either.

Oh man those are old-school tacos!  And the wide cheddar cheese strands take me back to the 70's.  I gotta check this place out.  Might I pray that they move to within stumbling distance of my house?

I agree, except Subway and Qdoba are not small local businesses either. They are huge chains!

So you get that hot hot lightly greasy tortilla shell, some picadillo beef, cheese on top of that to melt into the tortilla, cold lettuce & tomato, a little slasa, bite into it and it crumbles into the mouth with the fry grease merging all the flavors together?  Is that what I am imagining?

@Greg820 Here was the attack plan I used yesterday. Dump the salsa on the lettuce, cheese tomato pile and then use the taco as a plow to push the mixture onto the fork. Then bring both to my face simultaneously and eat like a Muppet. It's all over in a few seconds. Weird, I know.
