Ten Bells Tavern Got a Bad Yelp Review, so its Owner Shamed the Yelper

While some restaurateurs may feel held hostage by bad Yelp reviews, others are pulling out the big guns. Meri Dahlke, who owns and operates Ten Bells Tavern in Oak Cliff, noticed a nasty one-star review that seemed excessively spiteful.

From Yelper Mark G.:

I live in Oak Cliff and really wanted to like this place. But, frankly, it smells. Maybe if you sit outside you can't smell the nastiness, but inside is gross. It smells like it has been there for 50 years and never been clean, but it is a newer place. Some of the staff look cracked out. Looks like something you'd find a seedy part of town. I will avoid this place in the future. There are plenty of other places in the area to have a better experience.

Dahlke had never received a one-star review, so she called the author out.

Which part made it smell worse? The part where we didn't serve you any alcohol or the part where you harassed the female staff by exposing your chest hair in lieu of showing your ID? Next time you want a Miller Lite, please bring the appropriate ID that is required when you go to a bar and we'll gladly serve you.

The results are the best kind of advertisement a proprietor could hope for. Gawker and Reddit have picked the story up to the tune of tens of thousands of views, and now I know where I should grab a pint this evening.

Do you think YELP is helpful or just a place for people who are lost in life and need a place to vent?  Their cup is never 1/2 full?  I do not know. What I do know is 'I feel better when a person is understanding with me. Hard to understand critisizing a business or person with out first knowing all the facts.

With that in mind, why do you think decent people take any credence in YELP?

Have we lost the art of conversation to the fact that we search for bad gossip to entertain us?

rarely do I post-why all this negativity-do restaurant owners really want all these bitchy customers inside anyway?  Beats me, i don't get it!

Beautiusssssss days ahead.

Judges in California and Oregon have stated that Yelp is like the "Mafia" and "Organized Crime". Judge Henry Kantor in Oregon said that Yelp's business model is "offensive".

The judge believes that the Oregon Attorney General has an investigation pending regarding Yelp's treatment of businesses and that Yelp's business model is "problematic."

FOOTNOTE:  Judge Henry Kanton, Oregon Circuit Court, Portland  October, 7, 2013 at 10:56

“ I’ve been watching and paying attention to what both Mr. Bernath said and actually other things out that I’ve read out what’s going on with Yelp   and the way its handing businesses it has business with.  I find it offensive, I know there are class actions pendingit would not shock me at all if actually Mr. Bernath gets some relief for the way yelp is conducting its business model.  I think (Yelp’s ethics are)  its highly problematic

If Oregon attorney general office has not initiated something I suspect they will.  I don’t thinks this is any shock.  Yelp knows this in a more sophisticated way then I do. In fact I believe there may be something pending.  And I think down the line Yelp has to change or its going to look like what Mr. Bernath describes it; organized crime.”

Have we gotten an explanation from Dahlke how she knew yelper Mark G was the same patron who didn't have ID and showed his bare chest ?

Have any TB employees corroborated her story; or is it another fake Yelp post ?

Enquiring minds want to know...........any investigative journalists at CoE ?

The place is cool and the food is good, but I would say the staff is very rude there, they kind of have this attitude where its "not convenient " for them to serve you.

and you shouldn't take yelp so seriously. i do hope you can improve your overall customer service.

I don't understand why people are defending a douchebag who brandishes his chest hair in public.

As much as Jack Perkins can come across as an ass to some people, more of yall restaurant owners should take his stance on Yelp.  Fuck them, they dont mean shit to him.  He laughs when you threaten yelp at him.

Oh yes, all those restaurants that are held hostage by the internet, Yelp, the Observer, the Greeensheet, whatever your crutch is today. You have NEVER doled out old food that's on the verge of going bad by offering a special, you NEVER had an employee that stole someone's Credit Card Number. You NEVER give people the stink-eye when they come in 20 minutes before closing. These are just generic observations, but you can't say they NEVER happen. For 100 years the only recourse was people not visiting out of protest, or a bad newspaper review. Its about time the tables turned on the business.

I couldn't find that review on Yelp.  Anyway, I think Meri acted abominably.  It's extremely unprofessional, and childish, of her to react to a negative review with a temper tantrum.  Badly done.

Let's try this again....Just got off the phone with SABMiller. Asked them if they could bring a ML truck with hairy chested males with ID's to Ten Bells. Got a chuckle with "yes we've heard" and "we don't publicly humiliate anyone... even if they don't like our product"

Protip:  No matter how wrong a yelp reviewer might be, it's always best to not get involved in a net -based pissing match with them (and the guaranteed dogpile that's sure to follow).  Just take the path of least resistance and ignore it, unless you want a wound to be constantly re-opened.

Seriously?  At first I was "all in" for the owner of Ten Bells.  But lady, if this is your first bad review, get over it.  You run a business.  Not everyone is going to be happy with your food or service.  You have spent so much time responding to comments on the DO that I wonder how you even run it.

At this point, I wouldn't want to go to your restaurant and I won't!  I'm not gonna go on Yelp, I'm just gonna tell all my friends to read the DO article and how many times you've commented the minute someone pushes back.  No one likes a bully!

I totally respect the owner responding to a negative review.  However, what I don't understand is when you write a review on YELP and the owner can simply throw a fit and have it removed. I'm not suggesting this in the case of Ten Bells.  She should have called him out.

I wrote a review on a local restaurant a few weeks ago and it was nowhere near as obnoxious as the one for Ten Bells Tavern and YELP removed it.  It basically said, " The service and quality of the food was below average.  That I had so badly wanted to like their Bistro as it was in my neighborhood and had tried it  several times and would not be returning" Then I complimented them on the one thing they got right, the chicken dish.  Two days later, my review had been removed.  Keep in mind, this Bistro had other negative reviews far worse than mine and they're still posted.

Another business owner who Yelp'd me out of coming back.

Been a few times, nothing special and table service can painfully slow.

Multiple times I have had terrible service experiences at Ten Bells and it was not for lack of ID.  The staff there, with few exceptions, have consistently been extremely rude, inattentive, and arrogant.  They have a vibe that they are too cool for the patrons and for that reason I am always very hesitant to return, despite food that has been at times very good.

Specifically, I have sat outside and waited over 15 minutes with servers tending to other tables without being acknowledged.  Both times, after 15 minutes, I have moved to the bar to order/eat.  Once, the bartender was not just rude but outright confrontational.  It was one of the more bizarre experiences I've had in a restaurant.

How do you (and Dahlke) know that yelper Marc G was the individual without ID ?

Answer:  You don't !

P1Gunter
P1Gunter

I'm really confused by people that leave home without ID. I never leave my house without doublechecking that I have my keys, wallet, phone, and a pack of cigarettes. I seriously check every time before I get in my car.

That said, over the years I have left plenty of bad reviews of places on Foursquare. Some in obvious jest (the restroom at The Goat) but most honest. I'm not a food critic hired by DMN or DO but when food sucks, it sucks. Same with service. People should know. When I eat at a new restaurant the first thing I fo is check Foursquare for tips on what is good there.

Love it. As a local business owner I hate yelp.. The only negative reviews are by trainwreck customers every single time that have no credibility. You can't please everyone, and some people just can't be happy no matter how hard you try. @meri22201 we will for sure try Ten Bells sometime, your yelp post made me want to become a customer! =)

That is so fucking FANTASTIC!  I hate Yelp so much.  I actually got into a fight with an advertising sales rep who was mad at me for not advertising because our reviews were mostly good.  Meri, good for you!  So great!  And Ten Bells is awesome. I went there for a cheese plate recently and was blown away. The bartender left me alone because I was in an obvious text message exchange with my partner about how awesome said cheese plate was compared to ours, and as soon as I stopped being so rude, he was the nicest, friendliest barman I've seen in a while.  I get what Yelp is, but what is is is stupid.  You want to review shit? Be Chris Cantanelli or Steven Doyle and start your own blog.  And be good at it.

@lisabush seriously, I dont think anyone is defending the douchebag himself, as much as they are his right to make a comment on foursquare on the look of the place.  So maybe he shouldnt have called it a refurbished garage since the garage door was new, he should have gone with "New Garage"

@ScottsMerkin Exactly what he should do.  There's something wrong when someone decides which restaurant to dine in or not based on complete strangers comments.  I prefer to make my own decisions and trust my own taste buds and my treatment at that restaurant.

@Apocalypse_91 I don't think that anyone is making the argument that one must put up with truly bad service or terrible food.

I actually use yelp quite often when I am traveling for work and it can be helpful.  However, this is a case where a person (Marc G) is pissed about something that is his own fault and he is taking it out on Ten Bells - that is not useful and is petty.

I don't know if you have ever worked in the service industry, but there are about 5% of the general population who feel that their patronage entitles them to be abusive, hateful and degrading - I have seen it over and over.

Sounds like you already have an adversarial relationship with restaurants, so maybe you are biased.....

@T_S_ The Yelp incident itself is a few weeks old.  It was not until Reddit then Gawker picked it up that it is now news.  Otherwise, there was no story.  What's an owner supposed to when media outlets start reporting on the incident?  Offer "No comment"? Hire Allyn?  Social media goes both ways. Besides, what's wrong with an owner responding?  Dalat's owner is awesome at responding to Yelp reviews.  I love to read Dalat Yelp reviews only because Kahn is awesome at it.

rubbercow

@nicki364 Are you unable to understand that what Marc G did was bullying?  Running a small bar is extremely difficult work and it is too bad that some people choose to use Yelp as a punitive option when they feel like they didn't get good service.

Would you have any issue with a person posting an outright lie about your business?  This guy had no id and was being a dick so what does he do?  Oh, the place "smells".  I have been there numerous times and it does not smell.

Then, you have jerk-offs like Citizen Kane who are obvious (and proud) comp hunters - you know, people who go to a place specifically looking for a reason to request that their meal or drinks be comped.

What Meri has done is not bullying.  She responded to a bully.  Sad that you can't see that.  I guess you have never worked in the service industry?

@Sharon_Moreanus Let me guess; you are one of those, "the customer is always right," types, aren't you?  How dare a business owner stand up for their service when receiving an unwarranted, negative review from an assflute who harasses waitresses!

The customer is NOT always right. Enjoy your little entitlement fit, though.  I'm sure Ten Bells will weep at the loss of such an awesome patron.

Since you will no longer be visiting Ten Bells, I suggest Mac's Barbecue on Main St., only open for lunch. The jalapeño sausage is "off the charts", and big meaty ribs, great sauce.

@stephanilk02 @meri22201 as a person who has left a negative review about the food (not the service) I can honestly say that not all negative reviews are from "trainwreck customers".  I left a negative reviews, after much thought and consideration; I do take the review that are left with a grain of salt and realize everyone has an off day...but sometimes the food  and/or the service is just not what it should be.  Don't fool yourself into thinking nothing is wrong, or you'll end up losing more than just one dissatisfied customer.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Closing his account doesn't mean anything other than Dahlke intimidated the guy...no surprise, Dahlke seems like the confrontational type, ready to jump anyone who says something she doesn't like.......

I doubt it was a publicity stunt;  but for all we know Dahlke made up the accounts of Mark G behaviors.....no one has yet corroborated her claims of "sexual harassment" and other non-sense.   And she hasn't told us how she knows Marc G was the offending patron....!

lisabush

@ScottsMerkin @lisabush Are Chest Hair and Refurbished Garage the same guy?  I think the fact that Chest Hair posted a negative comment because he was butthurt due to being refused service due to lack of ID deserves explanation by the owner in a public forum...as for Refurbished Garage, while I'm not as bothered by that comment [could've been just a (mistaken) matter-of-fact observation], I do get the feeling it was made with a bit of derision, so I can understand why the owner might've taken offense.

@meri22201 The best part of everything I read here is: "will always defend my staff against the Mark G's of the world." Way to go! @AeroRazavi How did Fox News "reach out" ?

The fact that Marc G never responded is meaningless;  let's hear from Dahlke how she knew Marc G was the offender...

I find it surprising that Dahlke posted multiple times in this thread; but now won't answer a simple question:

How did she know Marc G was the offender that she slammed with the "sexual harassment" charge ?

AeroRazavi

Fox 4 did say they reached out to Mark G.  Mark G. would have had an opportunity to share his side of the story, but he did not.
