In Mermaid Sighting News, PETA Is Sending a Nearly Naked Mermaid to Rex's Seafood Tomorrow

PETA issued a press release today with Rex's Seafood in the crosshairs. Tomorrow the group will send a "nearly naked mermaid" to the restaurant and market at high noon on Patriot's Day to stick up for fish, writing that "Fish might not seem as cute and cuddly as the dogs and cats we share our homes with ..."

(Just for the record, the words "might" and "seem" indicate a bit of ambiguity here, which would be misleading. Fish absolutely are not cuddly. At all. I've never seen a person hold a fish and the fish like it.)

Regardless, PETA would like you all to consider a vegan lifestyle instead of one of those lobster rolls.

We called PETA to find out why Rex's in landlocked Dallas. Allison Lakomski with PETA wasn't sure right away but is checking with the project coordinator (mermaid?) and will get back to us on that. (See update below.)

In terms of the nature of the protest, Lakomski expects it to be pretty calm with a small group of PETA advocates holding signs and showing support for the nearly naked mermaid. Surely there will be photographers on hand as well, since they are casually, yet explicitly, using a woman's sexuality as a tool to bring attention to the cause.

Beau Bellomy with Rex's says he doesn't understand why they're focusing on a small-scale shop in Dallas as opposed to a big hatchery along the coast somewhere. "I don't think doing something outside of Rex's is really going to impress a lot of people," he says.

But turning an opportunity for PETA into an opportunity for him, Bellomy shrugs it off a little, "Maybe it'll bring in some customers. We're kind of slow now that school is back in session."

Rex's has quickly become a Dallas seafood institution since it opened in 2006. Just last year they were our favorite seafood market.

We'll certainly update this story as it progresses. Probably with pictures.

Update: PETA has responded on their reasoning for choosing Rex's

"The reason for choosing this location is that we want as many people as possible to learn that fish are intelligent, sensitive animals who experience pain and fear when they're hooked or netted and pulled from the water. In this busy location, customers headed to Rex's or simply passing by will get the message that it's time to start leaving fish and other animals off of their plates and eating delicious, healthy vegan food instead."

PETA doing what they do best--wh*ring for self-attention. Not really for helping animals. BTW the stripe on the cycler's shoes are leather. Let PETA figure that one out...

What's really funny: the guy pedaling the bike has shoes with leather on them....LOL  Way to go PETA.  Put you UGGs back on in protest.

Yep. No protesting those who really hurt animals, like protesting a puppy mill or a kill shelter.  That wouldn't wouldn't get press these hookers are looking for.  The attention whores doing what they do best- getting nekkid just to get their picture in the paper.  Honestly, they have never cared about the feelings of animals and their rights like most other animal rights groups.

FYI: Lobster rolls are only on Fridays... I noticed some of the publications joking about getting one today. :D

Rex's is good, but the mermaid should visit Fish Shack in Plano. a mom and pop store with the best oysters in town, its 'da bomb'.

They were in Turkey 2 years ago for Thanksgiving protesting the eating of turkeys.

They funny thing was people didn't know who PETA was.

I think I met the mermaid at an event at Norwood Flynn Gallery. She's very sweet and, well, kind of cuddly. :)

No. Even as someone not eating meat for non-PETA reasons, no.

I can't imagine a worse fish smell than a PETA mermaid. ....And that's even without the flipper thing.

@ChrisYu  Damn right about Shack.  I was in there Monday evening.

Bad news is that their fresh oyster supply is spotty right now due to a bacteria issue in their supplier’s beds because of the heat. Things should be back to normal in a few weeks. Try the fish tacos.
