Dr Pepper And Peanuts? Together? In a Glass? Get outta Here!

Whoa, whoa, Nellllllly. BuzzFeed Food, the website dedicated to blowing your mind with viral insanity of all sorts (like this bacon fiasco), posted an article recently that has me a bit flustered. It reads: "In Texas (and other parts of the South), people put them IN THE SAME GLASS."

"Them," my friends, is Dr Pepper and peanuts. Yes, BuzzFeed just explained to me that Texans drink Dr Pepper with peanuts floating in the glass like ice. And we're supposed to sip, eat. Sip, eat. Then, when we finish the DP, the bottom of the glass is full of peanuts for more intense snacking.

I'm a Texas lifer and have never heard of this. I know people that love Dr Pepper and those very same people love legumes, especially at a baseball games, but nary a hot summer day have I seen the two put together.

But, there's a picture of it. On the Internet. BuzzFeed at that, so it must be true. Even more fascinating, they say it's "the perfect food."

Any of you ever had of peanuts in your Dr Pepper? I anxiously await your insight.

BuzzFeed spotted the drink on the blog Homesick Texan, which is written by Lisa Fain, who has a cookbook out by the same name. She offers a recipe for Dr Pepper peanut brittle, which brought up the whole point of putting peanuts in DP, plus a reference to a Barbara Mandrell song and I can't believe I just referenced Barbara Mandrell in a food article. I get 10 points.

I will confess the Dr Pepper Peanut Brittle recipe (adapted from Cooking with Dr Pepper and 7Up) actually looks pretty good.

Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper all work. Always in the bottle, never a glass!

In school. I always saw the bad kids do it. I always thought it was a bad boy thing when I was seven or eight.

I've never put peanuts in DP but I could have lived off peanuts n Coke when I was 10 yrs old.

Don't know how you qualify as a life long Texas if this is your first Dr. Pepper & peanut rodeo. Next you're gonna tell us you never drank Dr. Pepper heated up in the winter.

My grand dad showed me this in about 1958.  You don put in glass...You put in the bottle.  Back then we had a huge 6.5 oz bottle.  Drink a little then add the peanut.  By the the way ,they were salted peanuts.  I thought my grandad was huge...he could drink 2 bottles (13 oz).  Funny how tomes change.

I thought it was Pepsi and peanuts. We did that as kids.

In a bottle? Sure. I've always heard of this but haven't done it in years. Never in a glass, though.

My gramps used to put peanuts in RC cola...( bottle only ) ... Cause they all worked outside back then!!!

Yes, it's an long established Texas thing, but in my 60 years I have NEVER heard of poring it into a glass. Ridiculous. You open a bottle of DP, take a couple of drinks, then pour the peanuts in. In a glass? Gay.

I have had Coca-Cola & peanuts my whole life. My great grandmother loved it.

What?? I thought my dad was crazy for doing that

Been around for many many years...my great grandmother use to do this.

I didn't know it existed until George Geurin told me about it. I tried it, and it's actually really good. It needs to be a really cold DP for it to be enjoyable.

My preference is Pepsi with peanuts or RC with peanuts.  This has been around for yeaaarrrrrssss.  Where 'ya been hiding?  I've never tried putting it together in a glass though.  Maximum tastiness and rationing is achieved when it's straight from the bottle.

LDD, you need to be out more.

Ask Barbara Mandrell about it.

MMM...salty and sweet with the peanuts creating a fizz.

Have you heard of tacos?

So, you're a native Texan & you've never heard of this behavior?  I find that very unusual.  I grew up in west Texas.  There are several variations of this practice.  For myself, I prefer peanuts in my Coca Cola.

Lance peanuts right out of that tall plastic bag and an ice-cold RC Cola in a glass bottle (watch the fizz!) were the only way to go in my Alabama youth.

Is it time to cue up the Hot Dr Pepper thread? The one where people confess to knowing people who heated Dr Pepper and drank it like hot tea (without milk or sugar, please).

Not in a glass, but peanuts in my bottle of coke is the bomb. Never did it with Dr Pepper, but can't imagine it would be a bad thing.

My mother does it. But she is from the 50's. It's just like putting peanuts in coke, and that was popular in those times.

My family out in west Texas does this as well.

Grew up putting peanuts in Dr. Pepper bottles.  To me, tastes better than in Coke.  Coke + peanuts = south

DP + peanuts = Texas

Damn straight!!  In the south it is actually Royal Crown Cola, sure not Coke.  (If you don't know RC then you should be sad....or go back to bed because it's past your bedtime)  My family owned a feedstore in the south for about 100 years.  RC and peanuts were easy--they were a one hand snack. We bartered with sharecroppers all day-traded watermelons, peanuts, and eggs for seed or feed.  Everyone get a free lagniappe-your choice of sodas and treat.  Nehi Peach and Moonpie, DP and peanutbrittle-->but the most popular and addictive is RC and peanuts.  Contrast and texture, salty and sweet.  LEARN IT

Goober coke, aka Coke with peanuts in it is a real thing. I've been drinking it since I was a kid and learned the habit from family in Alabama. I've always done it with the peanuts in the bottle the Coke comes in. For some reason it's not as good in plastic bottles. Really needs to be glass. I buy the Mexican cokes now when I want to have one. A couple of years ago a friend told me to try it with Sunkist orange soda. It's pretty good too. Never occurred to me to try it with DP but I have to say I think I'm going to go out and buy some DP with cane sugar and try it out.

It's a southern thing--RC (the Royal Crown Cola to you yankee dogs)and boiled peanuts were snack food long before all these ultra salty potato chips and hydrolyzed protein garbages.

I had a scoutmaster from Chicago that did Pepsi and Peanuts.

Old school south;  but it was Coke.....

Were digging Rock n Roll and Rhythm and Blues

I was country when country wasn't cool

I remember circling the drive-in

Pullin' up and turnin' down George Jones

I remember when no one was looking

I was putting peanuts in my coke

I took a lot of kiddin'

â€~Cause I never did fit in

Now look at everybody tryin' to be what I was then

I was country when country wasn't cool

Oh I was country when Country wasn't cool

This is how my dad drank coke (or "soda pop" as he called it) back in the 60's. It seems more of an East Texas thing.

1980's Coke called, they want their idea back...What's next? Milk and DP? Then Pepsi will be angry.

@porkrod69 Best possible reply imaginable, right out of the dang past that one is. Thanks.. for those are times I'll never know but have always yearned for since my thirties, a better place in time. I had forgotten Lagniappe all but completely and you are right, Coke never seemed close to RC cola as I finally learned in the early eighties. Hope that feedstore still has beeswax...
