Back Door Bootleg Bacon Fried Chicken Meal for $20 Will Blow Your Fried Chicken Mind

I got here as quick as I could. That bird was cooking no less than half an hour ago. This is a need-to-know to know kind of deal, and you all need to know.

For a little background: Chef Kenny Mills cut his teeth in the mean steakhouses of Dallas before going completely solo and opening an obscure (for about one week) burger joint, Chop House Burgers, in a (still sort of) obscure strip mall in Arlington. Soon, Guy Fieri with Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives came knocking, and even without that endorsement, the gourmet burgers served sans pretentiousness were a stroke of burger genius in an area that was suffering for any type of outstanding fare.

Then, earlier this year, Mills got a sweet deal on a piece of real estate in Pantego, just a bit west of his burger shop on Park Row, and opened Chop House Steak and Seafood. It's a throwback country spot serving fire-kissed steaks that melt in your mouth, along with upscale seafood plates and a huge salad bar that would delight any vegetarian. Plus, there's a great full bar with classic cocktails.

Well, last night on Facebook Mills posted this note:

Rumor has it that if you pull up to the back door of Chop House Steak and Seafood, ring the bell and hand the man $20 in a couple of minutes you'll get eight pieces of BACON fried chicken with mashed potatoes, roasted corn and jalapeño cheddar biscuits. Is it real? Try it and see.

"Every night?" I inquired because my husband was ready to pick a fight if it was just last night.

"Yes, every night." From noon to 9 p.m., as a matter of a fact (except Sundays -- they're closed).

So, to pick a fight myself, we just got the bacon fried chicken meal while this husband is at work today. And it was so totally worth it.

The roasted corn is cooked within an inch of its life, but then pulled back so those kernels bursting with sweetness are wrapped in smoke. The creamy (skin on) mashed potatoes are loaded with garlic. The thick crispy crust around the chicken clings to the meat through every bite. And, oh ... those biscuits. The in-house baker is fabulous. Her work is honest and generous. The huge hand-formed biscuits with pieces of jalapeños could make a meal alone.

So, you peel away a piece of chicken with the crust still intact, put a dollop (or two) of mashed potatoes on top, the stack a small piece of biscuit on top. Bam! Your chicken-fried mind is blown.

Mills says he starts the chicken in the oven covered with bacon fat and lets it simmer low and slow for an hour. Then, they bread it and fry it in a mixture of 50/50 bacon and canola oil.

Chef won't let you sit at a table inside the steak house and order the chicken dinner though. It's strictly a shady back door deal. You hand them $20 cash and wait less than five minutes for your meal.

You'll be hard pressed to find a better deal on eight pieces of chicken, with four pieces of roasted corn, four huge made-from-scratch biscuits and those creamy mashed potatoes for a flat $20.

After waiting 44 minutes , dirty looks from cars behind us and leaving the line, and angry horns blaring at us WE finally have the chicken.

A little disappointed. We are having a party for out of town guests. My husband drops me off at the back door at 640p to order 4 meals. I am told it will be 10-15 minutes. Its been 35 minutes and still no chicken. To make matters worse customers that ordered AFTER me have got their chicken and I am still waiting 37. min later...still no chicken

I was SO looking forward to this.  I like some of the other folks who have left feedback also expected a juicy chicken, I thought since it said "Bacon Fried Chicken" I would taste a bacon flavor, but there was no flavor  and it was dry as a bone.  The corn was half the size in the picture and had a smoky flavor, but was ok.  The potatoes were amazing and even better was the jalapeno biscuits.

I found out about this due to dinner Saturday night at the Chop House with friends.  The evening started out a little tense as when I arrived I stood at the door for five minutes before anyone approached me.  I told the person the waiters name and still, no one came back.  I left and told my friends to let me know when they arrived, because I couldn't get any assistance.  There is no signage telling you to round the corner to a hostess.  They have a mirror on a sofa table that the hostess is suppose to be keeping an eye on, but I observed her paying more attention to something on her podium (perhaps her cell phone).  I have watched the video of the owner stating he wanted an affordable steak house.  I must say, please check out the menu.  I can assure you most families will not be able to afford this trip.  My steak was $27 (24 & 3), as I added the Garlic Truffle butter, and I ordered the 5 Cheese mac and cheese which was an additional $5.  I must admit, the food was outstanding.  We had Calamari that was the best I have ever had.  I am just saying for the area the steak house is located in, they should serve a plated meal ie: a meat with two sides.

My husband and I decided to try this out Monday night. I was super stoked because I've heard SO much about it on Facebook, and from some other people, all positive. It was perfect because the restaurant is pretty much in my backyard, so I knew the food would still be piping hot when it got home. I'll start off by saying that the mashed potatoes were awesome, my favorite part of the meal. The corn on the cob didn't let me down either. My husband and other family members who partook of this meal said the biscuits were very good, too. Then we get to the chicken, the main course, the thing I was looking the most forward to. I won't say that it was terrible, because it wasn't., buuuuut we weren't in love with it either. The chicken didn't seem to have much flavor and it wasn't juicy like I was expecting. I'm not sure if it was all the hype that I had built up in my head or what, but I have to say, I've had better fried chicken. All in all, the family was pleased with the side dishes and not so pleased with the main dish.

"fire-kissed steaks that melt in your mouth, along with upscale seafood plates and a huge salad bar that would delight any vegetarian. Wow, after reading the original review I knew I had to stop by and try it out! We just finished up our bootleg bacon fried chicken meal and I am sitting here in a food induced euphoria previously reserved only for the sweetbreads appetizer! I rang the bell and within minutes was greeted, passed my cash and got that big brown bag that smelled like the gourmet version of Mom's home cookin! Chef Kenny Mills has done it again, the hardest decision now is to go in for dinner or just drive around back and take it with us.  Thanks y'all!!!

I saw the same Facebook post yesterday and made my way down Park Row to get my bootleg bacon chicken.  Unfortunately, I believe that we had a different experience yesterday.  Your chicken and biscuits look wonderful but mine did not.  The chicken was overcooked and dry and the biscuits were like bricks.  However, the potatoes were to die for.  I'll pass on getting my food from alleyways from now on.

You went down the wrong path when you said "I saw the same Facebook post yesterday".....you were doomed.  Karma dislikes Facebook, as do most folks with a healthy soul.
