I love small, family owned restaurants. You do too. The quaint dining rooms and original menus make for lasting memories while affordable prices make it possible to return again and again. Here are some of the best mom and pop restaurants in Dallas.

Los Torres Taquería (pictured above)
This small family owned taqueria serves up some amazing goat in Oak Cliff. The corn tortillas are hand-made to order and a salsa bar gives you plenty of ways to adorn your meal with acid, heat and pungency. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a member of the Torres family is always there to greet you. It's like eating in your your favorite aunt's living room. Provided your aunt is from Sinaloa, Mexico.

Avilas
Restaurant drama may have divided the family, but the first location from the Avilas maintains all of its charm. Brisket-stuffed chili rellenos are one of the most popular dishes served here, but it's hard to go wrong. Don't sleep on the sour cream enchiladas either. Oh, and watch out for the salsa. It will light you up.

Grilled meat is king at the East Dallas South American restaurant with Bolivian leanings, and I've yet to talk to a person who didn't love their time in this dining room. If you go, the space is busiest in the late evenings (after 8 p.m.), which is something you don't want to avoid. Joyce and Gigi's is at its most magical when it's filled with happy patrons.

I will be the third to say that Mac's BBQ on Main is a family favorite.  Opened in 1956.

Pietro's on Richmond near lower Greenville is one of the oldest family restaurants in Dallas. The Eustachio family opened it in 1960.  Three generations of my family have eaten at this restaurant where the family lives upstairs.

Since moving to North Dallas, we discovered "Pete's Cafe. Great breakfast and home style cooking & you can't beat the prices. Small restaurant with great wait staff that you can't help but get to know the regulars.

Do the random tamale vendors count? I love those things. I'm not sure if it's really chicken or pork considering I never see stray cats or dogs around the Medical District or Oak Lawn areas, but I don't care. Those are good tamales!

The best Mom and Pop restaurant is Aboca Italian restaurant, at Meadow and Central Expwy.  Their homemade bread  to dip in their sauce of olive oil, fresh garlic, oregano, and basil, is worth the trip alone.  Best of all, it is BYOB, making it so affordable.

Another excellent Mom and Pop, is Mac'c barbecue on Main St. in Dallas, don't miss the jalapeño sausage and meaty ribs, fresh cut french fries, only open for lunch.

this isn't a race issue...this is an art and artist issue. it is hard to argue against the growing arts district in dallas---it has happened and it is happening. looks like this group is saying, let's grow some artists here and boom this thing. just because the group on the stage was white doesn't mean that they are idiots. this group is very strong in their respected fields---would it have been better to have the same sort of panel representation with more diversity, absolutely.

In your Louie's blurb: "... that get to job done." Seriously? Do you bother to proof-read your posts?

Should have known it would be all Hipster. I just need to give up on The Observer. No connection with reality.

@Jane DeNike Jane, are you referring to the Tony's on NW Highway in Lake Highlands?  If so, I totally agree.  That's some awesome Italian food, for a great price.

@darkskiesrock   Sakhuu is hipster?  Kyla and his family have been operating this restaurant, and it's predecessors, since 2002.  With lots of empty seats most nights, they would love to be a hot hipster place.

@darkskiesrock It's food? What's hipster about a bunch of Mexican restaurants being listed as places to check out? If the article were about DIY yogurt shops or a cold cereal bar, then you might have a bit of foundation.

"This is hipster waaaah" is a VERY hipster thing to say

@romeolipschitz @Twinwillow Obviously you must be very familiar with the male "sausage".

Personally, I'm not gay. But apparently you're someone who needs to come out of that closet you're hiding in. it's OK, now. You can. No one will mind.
