I have made exactly two pecan pies my entire life. You're looking at them. Truth be told it's all that high-fructose corn syrup most recipes call for that keeps me from baking them more often. That just may have to change though, now that pecan pies are the official state pie of Texas. Besides, they're delicious.

Seriously, my grandmother has been making them for four generations of my family. It's about time it'd get recognized lol!

I dunno. I still like banana cream.

The nutritional "sin" of the Pecan Pie is NOT the Karo Syrup; but the eggs (filling), butter and lard (pie shell).

Call me a sinner.

I beg to differ: if you make it from home, you can avoid HFCS.

If you believe the manufacturer... here's what they say on their website:

"When Karo was introduced in 1902, it did not contain high fructose corn syrup. Sometime in the 1970's, it was added to the Karo light and pancake syrups. As a result of consumer requests, the high fructose corn syrup has now been removed and all Karo products are high fructose corn syrup free."

My sainted blue-blood yankee mother-in-law makes the best pecan pie i've ever had.  not too sweet, so it doesn't overwhelm the toasty pecans, but the filling is still rich and luxurious.

Although pecan pie is not my favorite pie, I certainly agree about it being the state pie of Texas.

And like our great sage Kirgo added, Shiner should be the Texas state beer!

I guess I just assumed that the vaunted pecan pie is the state pie; what else says Texas like picking pecans in the late fall?  Then making that sweet treat!  And I don't care if it's got high-fructose corn syrup in it; I don't eat Alfredo everyday either.

Goes well with:

-Scoop of vanilla Blue Bell

-Following great BBQ

They finally got something right, I would've had a heart attack if they had said pumpkin.

Thank goodness we were able to put education on the back-burner to get this legislation through!

@todd That yankee mother in law likely got her "best pecan pie" recipe from a Texan....mine (the filling) came from a North Carolinian, and the pie shell recipe from a New Yorker.

@kergo1spaceship I'll cosign on some warm pecan pie with a side of blue bell. That pie has to be made by a woman that was old enough to vote in the 1960's. Those old country broads know how to make a pecan pie that is firm and not runny.
