Mom Bloggers Attack Kraft Macaroni and Cheese

Categories: Food News

What the hell is cheesy pasta?Remember pink slime? Remember screwy additives in Gatorade? I always get a kick out of small efforts by consumers and advocates whose issues with large companies gain momentum and lead to changes in our food system.

Pink slime has been abandoned by many restaurants and grocery stores, sufficient to cause the company that manufactures the lean finely textured beef to shut down several plants. Sarah Kavanagh, a high school student in Mississippi, started a petition to get PepsiCo to stop using brominated vegetable oil, a stabilizer. The company since removed the ingredient from its sports beverage.

Now two mom-bloggers are aiming their sites at Kraft, charging the company's use of artificial food dyes is putting American children at risk.

Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 have been linked to a whole host of maladies sufficient to cause some European companies to ban the chemicals and others to require warnings on the packages. In response, Kraft has replaced the dye in European products with natural beta carotene and paprika, which yield about the same color in the finished product. They also label the boxes cheesy pasta instead of macaroni and cheese, which I point out for no rational reason other than I find it humorous.

If you're inclined, Lisa Leake and Vani Hari have started a petition on change.org to try to get Kraft's attention. They're only 20,000 signatures away from reaching their goal.

I just got back from Kroger.  I had the urge to knock all of the Kraft Mac and Cheese boxes onto the floor.

Right?  I just got back from Tom Thumb, and had a strong urge to knock all of the Fruit Loops off the shelves.

They are (dramatic Wagnerian music, then pregnant pause)...... KILLERS!  Don't let em fool you with the fruity, and the loopy, and the different colors-and that evil toucan; the birdy devil with a large beak.

ps-Just as dangerous?  Grape Nuts.  They'll turn you into an 85 year old knitting granny in two bites!

The irony of people taking the time to comment on an activity they think is a waste of time is pretty fantastic.  That these women have blogs or children is completely immaterial to the discussion, but don't let facts get in the way of a good personal attack.  Kraft is knowingly using products here in the US that they are not allowed to in other parts of the world because of the potential dangers from those additives.  There's nothing wrong at all in raising awareness about this.

You all seem to missing the point which is why can Kraft sell this product in England without the dyes but sell it here in 'Merica with the dyes.

Answer: Because 'Mericans are, on the whole, STUPID.

@Mervis_Earl Americans aren't stupid, we've just been conditioned to believe that convenience is better than quality.

@Mervis_Earl Yeah. The deal is that Europeans don't allow that stuff in their food. HFCS is also not allowed in Europe. It's not anything Kraft has done. it's what people have allowed.

Let's see ......boil some water and add elbow noodles; add some Velveeta-voile, 7 minutes!  Is this really an issue, or is it two tubby housemom's bored watching those little demons, and drinking too much chardonnay? Come to think of it, I'd be crazy also in the same scenario.

Let's see...Annie's Organic version is pretty good, and Alton Brown's stovetop mac & cheese recipe is just as quick and 100 times more delicious, with absolutely no odd ingredients and the ability to tailor it to your taste.

I'm guessing these are the same moms who get the 30-something ugly-ass bob cut because they claim they just don't have time to do their hair.

@Scruffygeist How easily do you think you can find Annie's Organic in South Dallas?

I agree, I don't eat the stuff either, but...

@scott.reitz By that logic the bitching should be most about the store-brand Kraft knock-offs then.

All that energy put into telling someone how to run their business instead of making their own goddamn mac n cheese.

That's the way the world is now Todd  everybody bitching and nobody utilizing simple solutions, like, "making their own goddamn mac n cheese".

@todd Both of those bloggers do just that. The problem is that so many people don't...and the trade-off for those who choose convenience should not be toxic food.

todd
todd

@Jenn @todd My deepest apologies for making an assumption.  Still, as noble as their cause may be, I don't understand attacking Kraft.  They are in business to make money within the confines of the law.  They list, as required by law, the ingredients in their products.  Yet they are the bad guy?  Why not go after the FDA for allowing Yellows 5 & 6 to be served in our food?  That way the people who choose some other convenience product are protected as well.

@todd @Jenn yes, Kraft has absolutely no role to play in keeping those dyes legal in the US. they don't throw money at politicians or indirectly control the regulators.

So, the rest of us care why?   Go jump on the Global Warming train, or picket out front of titty bars.

What's funnier than drinking in a dark cavern, lookin' at some sweater meat, then walking into the cruel light, and seeing some fat lady with a dyke haircut, in size 44 jeans, holding a sign that says "Repent!".

ps-Then you get in yer monster truck.

Vani Hari is not a "mom" blogger. Lisa Leake is a food blogger who happens to be a mom. It seems dismissive to lump these ladies in with the superficial mommy blogger set when a) if Vani Hari has kids, she sure doesn't mention them on her blog and b) their websites are almost exclusively about healthy eating. My take on your post is that you think it's super cute that these "mommy bloggers" (who are not mommy bloggers) are trying to take on Kraft....but the point is one that should concern us all, whether we're moms or not. These food additives are potentially toxic, unnecessary..and too many Americans load up their grocery carts without even knowing this.

Why don't they invest their energy in making homemade Mac and Cheese?

scott.reitz

@stevelIsn't that irrelevant? Making mac from scratch will set you back $15 -$20? You van get a box for $.99. Most of Americans eat this way.

ScottsMerkin

for fucks sake, there is bad shit in everything we eat, and if they have such a big problem with it, instead of cooking a box of mac n cheese for your kids bc you are either lazy or claim to not have enough time, make some homemade mac bitches.
