Liberty Burger Opening New Location in Lakewood

The Lakewood Advocate has reported that a thirdLiberty Burger location will open in the Lakewood Shopping center where the old Catalina 5G Boutique (1904 Abrams Road) and the School of Contemporary Ballet used to live. Proprietor Mariel Street has signed a lease on both those spots and will tear down some walls and make one space out of the two.

When the original Liberty Burger on Forest Lane opened in late 2011, we sensed it wasn't going to be a one-off place. Then, a second spot opened last summer at 5181 Keller Springs. Considering Mariel Street is the daughter of restaurateur Gene Street, who founded Black-Eyed Pea, Good Eats, Cantina Laredo, Cool River and III Forks, it's safe to assume she knows a thing or two about expansion.

She also has her big brothers, Dace and Gene Jr., who run Snookie's, to tap for a little advice. This is not in any way to suggest that Mariel needs them, because any girl who spends two years on an extremely remote island with an indigenous tribe is a girl of her own determination and mind. And she's fluent in five languages. Meet Mariel. Really, she's quite fascinating.

Liberty Burgers are definitely hippie burgers with a conscience. The company works under the ethos of "without quality there is no value" and has pledged to set "the bar high with our standards in food quality, social contribution and environmental responsibility." Although they did lose in a burger smackdown with Hopdoddy last year, we still like them. Street hopes to open the Lakewood spot late this summer.

Liberty burgers are good, but check out the wood grilled burgers at Rathbun's Blue Plate Kitchen in Preston Center.  Also, Snuffers is a good burger on those awesome poppy seed buns.
