Farmers Market Report: Greens Are Springing in Coppell

This Saturday might have been the worst day yet in this early spring season for farmers markets as far as the weather is concerned. Early morning thunderstorms were followed by some seriously nippy temperatures -- it was a damp, cold, windy Saturday morning. Despite the weather, the more devoted farmers market shoppers were out doing their shopping at the Coppell Farmers Market, which held the last of its winter markets this weekend.

If you're headed to a farmers market in early spring you can expect a veritable forest of greens. Red and green lettuce, kale, arugula and other leafy vegetables were piled high on tables at the Coppell market, which is now in its 10th season. I was particularly struck by the display set up by Hiram Farms. In addition to the gourmet greens they had bagged up and ready to go, small bundles of cilantro were so fresh they looked blue in color. The family-owned farm from West Point also offered products made with some of the ingredients they've grown. Be sure to check out their sauerkraut supply if you're looking to make some Reubens.

Chris Buckalew from Weather Top farm sold young plants of all varieties for customers to take home and plant in their own gardens. In addition to the lettuce you see here, Buckalew had tomatoes, peppers and many other vegetable seedlings for sale. He says what he doesn't sell at the market he just takes back and plants in his own garden.

And Good Earth Organic Farm had mountains of kale and other greens and spring onions. They had spring lamb, too.

The Coppell Farmers Market will be closed this Saturday (March, 30) and then open the following Saturday (April, 6) and every subsequent Saturday through the remainder of the season.

Drive 21 miles to Coppell or 1 to Spicer's...ohhhh the decisions.

Never been to Coppell but I go to Tom Spicer's at 1410 Fitzhugh regularly.  He grows many of his own greens on site and they are as fresh and as good as they get.  Best mushrooms in the city, too.
