Dallas' Eight Best Pizza Places

Categories: Best Of Dallas

Cane Rosso Marg.jpg
As I sit at my desk a sudden craving for pizza has overcome me. This instantly reminded me that it's been sometime since we've updated our list for Best Pizza in Dallas, here on City of Ate. Things have changed a touch since we last updated that list. Even though it's still a little short, there's a newcomer or two, and there's plenty of great pie to be found. Starting with the undisputed King of Neapolitan.

Cane Rosso (pictured above)
Cane Rosso is still on our list of course. We named them the city's Best Pizza in our last Best of Dallas issue for the second year in a row. I'm starting to wonder how long it will be before a young entrepreneurial pizzaiolo dethrones the great Jay Jerrier. For now, he's quite safe. But there are a number of other pizzerias that deserve some attention too ...

Eno's
Like Enos. Every time I'm in the Bishop Arts District and I'm craving 'za, I head to Eno's to indulge that crisp cracker crust with a great selection of local beers. I love the open, upstairs bar, and the staff has always been great about helping me pick out a beer.

Olivela's pizza Kerens.jpg

Olivella's
Olivella's makes a great pizzas across multiple locations in the Dallas area. USA Today named the pizza one of the nation's greatest and I'm not one to disagree. It's not Neapolitan and they clearly say so -- but the soft and blistered crust makes for a damn fine pie.

Fireside Pies
Even without one of Dallas' coziest patios, the original outpost of this chain would be the go-to pizzeria for folks who live within craving distance of Knox-Henderson. The wood-fired pizzas have a crust almost soft enough for Naples and a crispy, blistered cornicione (the edge crust). Grab one with Jimmy's sausage for a pizza with some local flair, and be sure to wash it down with a craft beer from the bar.

*****

Grimaldi's Pizza.JPG

Grimaldi's
So maybe the Grimaldi's in Uptown's West Village has a fraction of the charm of the Brooklyn location. The original has so much personality a fraction is more than enough. Grab a seat at one of the red-checked tables and order a carafe of house red and make a night out of it with a massive New York-style pizza. The crust is thin, perfect for that tell-tale half fold, and as crisp as a potato chip.

*****

Nova Four meat Pizza.jpg
Nova
Dallas is a city that's a challenge for night owls with an empty stomach. But there are a few places that serve great food late into the night. Nova's pizzas get the job done when most of the other bars in Dallas are mopping the kitchen floors. And the neighborhood locals who congregate at the bar make this one of Dallas' best places to spend late night.

*****

coal vines.jpg
Coal Vines
Think of Coal Vines like a Dallas-based Grimaldi's with even more kitsch. They've even got a portrait of old Blue Eyes up on the wall, as Italian cliché pours from the speakers. The dining room is dimly lit with dark fixtures. And in a way it all seems to come together. You'd be lucky to have a pizzeria like this on your block.

Dough Pizzeria Napoletana
Look at how serious this guy is, as he's making your pizza. Do you see how serious he is? If you live in Preston-anything, this is where you should get your pie. It's good.

Grimaldi's in Dallas isn't even close to being in this list. It was mediocre pizza and overpriced.

I know it's not a "Pizza Place" but is it just me or does Angelo's in Lakewood crank out some of the best 'za in DFW? ... most notably the Spicy Dago.

Grimaldi's and Cane Rosso....mmmmmmm!

ps-Mr. Gatti's?  MG's is so good; reminds me of Papa Gino's.

When you're up for world-class pizza without the fru-frus and valet parking,  Scalini's in Lakewood understands the concept of scorching the crust as ordered,  the best crisp crust in Texas.   Generous helpings of things atop the pizza.  Get the super-large,  it's cheap,  nothing as good as cold pizza for breakfast.

None of these measure up to genuine Chicago-style pizza in any way whatsoever. What I wouldn't give for a deep-dish pizza from Gino's East!

@MissMacy

and none of "these", or those measure up to good old Yankee pizza, like Dipeitro's in Medford Square, or Evans in the lower cape. Stick to the brats!?

For those in the great white north...Cavalli, Urban Crust, and my personal favorite for NY style: Ferrari's in Plano at Preston/Tennyson.

@jjerrier Must go to Ferrari's now... Thanks for the tip, Jay. Your pizza is the best I've ever had in my life.

These are all very good pies. I'd also add Bryan Street Tavern in the "bar pie" category.

A lot of people mention Louie's, but I find it overrated, and there's just something off about their sauce.

@MattL11 I don't enjoy the pizza at BST since the ownership change, but agree about Louie's. It's not my favorite pizza in town, but I do love drinking martinis and talking to the bartenders.

enos!!! That pizza is the worst I've ever had. It was so bad I chunked it into my trash can, even my dog wouldn't eat it. Let me describe my order ok, pizza: paper thin, ingredients looked like they were just tossed on there and covered with cheese hallf ass cooked. Next, my wife had ordered PASTA! but once we got home she discovered it was just rice soaked with oil and cherry tomatoes. It was so greasy the oil was sipping threw the box it came in. Worst 30.00 I've ever spent.

Who the hell are you people and why do you prefer "pizzas" with a huge crust and barely any cheese?

Cavalli Pizza.

JustSaying

@Nik Shah Fuck that place. When I eat pizza, I like to leave stuffed. I could eat 2 entire Cavalli pizzas in one sitting. This is coming from a dude that usually can't make it through 2 1/2 slices at a regular pizzeria. Pizza and light should never be used in the same sentence. Unless you are ordering 2 slices and a light beer.

I'd be cautious about recommending Olivella's. Last 3 times, the PC location was NG.

No blistered crust, skimpy toppings, limp & doughy. Small crowd. Definitely a downhill alert.

It's not the greatest but for a New York style pizza, I think Brothers is solid.

@xuco1  agreed, and they've been reliable for many years.

Louie's is better than at least two of the places on the list.

Am I the only one who finds Fireside to be completely overrated? Give me Grimaldi's any day. Dough is quite good too.
