James Beards 2013: Seven Dallas Chefs Nominated for Prestigious Food Awards

You knew this burger was good, but did you think it was James Beard good?
The nominations for the James Beard Foundation Awards were just announced, and Dallas: You're looking pretty good. Seven chefs and restaurants have been named as some of the country's best for service, food and bar and wine programs.

Last year I called the list of nominees a total snooze as far as Dallas is concerned. This year things have changed considerably.

Previous nominees included Stephan Pyles, Bruno Davaillon and Teiichi Sakurai. Sakurai has been nominated again, but this year he's joined by Jason Maddy from Oak. (Davaillon was not nominated this year.)

I think this is a good sign for Dallas' food scene, as Maddy represents the new chefs who are helping sculpt Dallas' rapidly evolving food scene. I'm surprised that Lucia's David Uygur wasn't mentioned, as I think he really deserves the attention, but I'm happy to see some other new restaurants get a nod.

Cedars Social has been nominated for Best Bar Program, giving weight to the claim that Dallas' cocktail culture is indeed blossoming. And Nick Badovinus, who runs the Neighborhood Services group (and puts out the burger you see above, at Off-Site Kitchen), eared a much deserved nomination for best restaurateur. This is exciting news for Dallas.

Here are the rest of the local nominations:

Outstanding Bar Program
The Cedars Social

Outstanding Chef
Stephan Pyles, Stephan Pyles Restaurant,

Outstanding Restaurateur
Nick Badovinus

Outstanding Service
The French Room

Oustanding Wine Program
Cafe on the Green

Best Chef Southwest
Jason Maddy, Oak
Teiichi Sakurai, Tei-An

Dallas is one of the best cities to find good restaurants. We do love good food & fun events.

Another great burger joint, often overlooked, is Del's Charcoal Hamburgers in downtown Richardson......there is nothing like the flavor you get from charcoal.  Don't miss their Hickory sauce.

Short of the shredded lettuce, that burger looks amazing. leaf romaine would work better.

Teiichi is due. His restaurant is so creative and his food is so damn good! You won't find a menu this ambitious anywhere in the southwest...

Nick Badovinus deserves the recognition. Not only does Off-Site Kitchen burgers compare to places like Shake Shack or Burgermesiter but more importantly they are huge supporters of Wounded Warrior Project. I wish more owners had the courage to use their businesses as a way to generate funds for nonprofits. Do I need that ice cream cone, absolutely not. Will I feel better about donating money and eating the ice cream, ABSOLUTELY.

@monstruss I did. They must have edited it later. You don't have to be a jerk, just point it out.

@joyfulunwisdom Play nice. I've written so much about that burger I didn't realize a new reader might not recognize it.

Seriously? That burger looks disgusting.

@Linda ColemanConsidering the small space and constantly packed tables at Off Site Kitchen, I'm glad you find it disgusting. Maybe one less person to deal with. You probably like On the Border, why don't you go get some Shrimp Poppers or Xtreme Fajitas instead?

@facepalm No thanks.  Off Site, On the Border, what's the difference?  I prefer cooking at home.
