Pie Five Coming to Denton's New Fancy Fry Street

Categories: Food News

Pie Five Denton.jpg
Fry Street's post-lecture-pre-booze-then-post-booze food options are expanding yet again with the addition of a Pie Five Pizza Co., slated to open in the next two weeks or so (according to a guy with a hammer and bucket and painty jeans). Correction: According to an email Pie Five, bucket man was optimistic. They open in mid-January.

Pie Five will be Fry Street's first attempt at pizza since the fiery death of the Flying Tomato in 2007 and will likely garner some serious business, much like neighboring Chipotle, PotBelly, Macdaddy's and the newest addition, Yogurtland.

Recently named one of four new "Hot Concepts" by Nation's Restaurant News, Pie Five's fast-casual brand is experiencing a rapid growth. The little brother of The Colony-based Pizza Inn, Pie Five touts a revolutionary pizza-making experience built around a rather attractive five-minute bake time.

For around $7, hungry customers can choose from a list of standard specialty pizzas: one with a pile of various meat, one for veg-heads, one with buffalo chicken, one with olives and feta and one with pork and pickles (what the what?!). If you're craving something more custom, you can also choose from the "periodic table of pizza toppings" on the wall, making your 9-inch personal pie as unique as you are. A pie-tech will then crown you a creative genius and in just five short minutes, you are free to horf down your personal pie and burn the roof of your mouth in the process.

Pie Five will compete (somewhat) with Tulsa-based Top That, a concept also specializing in fast-casual, personal pizza that opened recently in Denton's ever-expanding Rayzor Ranch development. Methinks they shouldn't worry; there can never be to much pizza in this permahungry college town.

Wink wink, cough cough, Mr. Jerrier.

I wonder what happened to the commenter known as "PieFivePizza"......methinks he may have resigned after reading these posts on Friday.

Potbelly, Chipotle and now this?  Holy shit, I'm glad I went to NTSU/UNT when I did, and not now.

and in a related development, a new subway is opening...somewhere.

really, this is as non a news item as it comes. the pizza at this place is mediocre, comparable to going to the freezer at your local grocer and buying a digiorno.

actually, the digiorno might be better.

for the life of me I can't understand why sara would think this is worth writing an article about.

@kergo1spaceship He should throw himself off one of the bridges on Woodall-Rogers during rush hour.

Nah, forget rush hour. The cars are going too slow.

@mavdog she wrote about it because its the latest chain to move in on Fry street.  They have taken the uniquness of Fry st.  away, just as the developer planned!

Hi hlundy56, Pie Five has been trying new crusts, sauces, cheeses and even adding new toppings to their menu. Can I get more info from you on what you did or didn't like last time you went? You can e-mail me at media@piefivepizza.com

@Twinwillow You should tap the break (only slightly), they arent marketing toward the well versed pizza eater.  They are after the college kid who wants a fast pizza relatively cheap.  I dont think they ever intended to compete with Cane Rosso.

@Twinwillow  Ok, you're right on one thing, CiCi's is cheaper but can you give us some feedback to help us make our pizza better? I'm at media@piefivepizza.com

Gone are the days you could stumble down FS half crazed on liquor....Denton is changing.    Next, the heralded Indie Beard will no longer be en vogue. And if you can't have the Indie Beard, you can't have the train conductor hat, and that means you can't have messy hair sticking out of all sides of said train conductor hat; and that means you can longer wear yer Buddy Holly glasses (with or without lenses), and that means you'll have to abandon yer John Lennon Circa 1972 army jacket-which leads to you throwing away all yer Dead Kennedy albums, and you start listening to that mindf+cking swill they play on 97.5 KLAK.

Isn't that why canned beans, Pancho's, Subway and the dollar menu at McDonald's was created?

@PieFivePizza First, hire a competent staff!

As far as the pizza itself is concerned, the crust sucks! I've been only twice (for the sake of convenience, only). Thank goodness I have Cane Rosso to go to. And soon, they'll be opening another location even closer to me.

To many really good pizza choices in Dallas to choose from than to have to stoop so low as to go to PieFive. As an analogy, Its like eating all the really burgers available to us in Dallas but choosing to go to MacDonald's.

I wish you good luck if anything, to keep people working. Even if they don't know what the hell they're doing.

Wow, you really got yer hands full there.......when the only three comments are THAT "negative", you run LIKE HELL out of that place-NOW!

I worked for a place like that once; a certain BBQ place with the initials SB, and one day I just told told em to shove it, because sh+t was going WRONG.

ps--Trust me, run....you'll be better off.  Hope they are not relatives or best friends. RUN!

git em Twinnie .....I like that fire, sir!  It's reminds me of when I've dealt with Dickey's, or the Albertson's at 75 and Spring Creek (gone now!)  I once tried to buy $150.00 worth of groceries for a camping trip at said store at 6:15 in the morning, and they couldn't ring me up until a cashier arrived at 7 (even though they opened at 6 AM).......so, I waited until 7, and it JUST WASN'T going to happen; that was the first day I EVER went into a Walmart (across the street).

I feel yer pain Twinnie: TOO MANY GOOD people need to work.
