Hate Your Family? 10 Dark Bars to Find Joy In Dallas

Well, OK, "hate" is a strong word. Besides, love is close to hate. Indifference is actually the bad place. Anyhoo! The holidays are upon us. And remember, it's healthy to release the pressure created after stewing for hours in a crowded room, breathing in dank, hostile air.

So, perhaps you'll need just one drink to take the edge off. Then, another for good measure. Here are 10 bars with dark corners, lovely people (who aren't related to you) with reliably cold and/or strong drinks.

Ships Lounge (1613 Greenville Ave).
Scott Reitz penned an ode to Ships Lounge and, particularly, why you should go there to watch the Cowboys game (which is at 3 p.m.,of course. I feel silly even writing that, but just in case you're new to Earth). Ships opens at their regularly scheduled time of 10 a.m. Thursday and will have some turkey, ham and other dishes too. New family?

Lakewood Landing (5818 Live Oak).
I haven't done official research on this, but it appears Lakewood Landing has received the most Best Of awards here at the Observer. The list includes: Best Beer Joint, Best Juke Box, Best Home Away From Home, Best Dive Bar, Best Overheard Conversation. So, Best of Everything Ever opens at 8 p.m. on Turkey Day.

While at Lakewood Landing, if you need to stretch your legs, waddle around the corner to Cosmo's Bar and Lounge (1212 Skillman St.). Apparently we don't have a category for best light fixtures and lampshades or this place would clean house. Additionally, it's dark, comfy and there are many good tunes on the jukebox. Cosmos will let you in at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

as a cliff dweller it surprises me that Tradewides was beaten about by two Bishop Arts johnny come lately's.   Not that they aren't great, cuz they are..but Ten Bells actually has an outside area and OCSC is a bit visible.   Tradewinds is all about the dark.

taking a picture in Cosmo's during the day is pure sacrilege.

You left out The Hidden Door,  Lemmon at Mahanna.   Open 7a-2a,  if you need an early start before you go to the relatives.

I don't hate my family, such as it is, but I do hate myself.  I presume the same rules apply.

Happy Thanksgiving, LDD.  Don't spend too much time in the bars!

Go somewhere ? And get caught in the no refusal weekend crack down ? I would much rather enjoy sitting in the living room Laz-E-Boy Glaring at the merrymakers while drinking double shots of cheap West Indies Rum .

Well it is not a dark bar, but both Buttons locations have Thanksgiving night live music...Blues in Fort Worth and R&B in Addison. This is our first year opening this night, but so many people asked we decided to open for the evening.

It's not always easy to fill a blog/weekly mag. I imagine poor Eric Nicholson gets the brunt of the "lame" assignments.....in which NO ONE is pleased.

I didn't think that CS EVER closed-wow!  It's like that place over by the old Lipstick Cabaret;  I think it's the  Red Lion Pub? You drive around back to park, and there in a common outside area amongst scattered tables are hookers, truckers, up all nighters, strippers and regular folk.

Okay, now let's be Christian during this time of our lord's, uhmmm, celebration of capturing the Indians?  Can I say Christian without the ACLU or some other liberal group getting mad and dumping paint on my fur coat?

I give thanks on this day that the Indians didn't annihilate us when we got off at Plymouth!   Speaking of Plymouth, I once wanted to take an inflatable boat down the Cape Cod Canal, and get shot out down by the old Horizon's Restaurant.
