Burger Smackdown: West Dallas Fast Casual Class, Off-Site Kitchen Vs. Maple and Motor

BurgerSmackdown OFS vs MandM.jpg
Our first smackdown of the week pits two burger joints in close proximity to Observer headquarters. I've eaten at both restaurants more often than I care to admit, but this is the first time I'd raced to Maple & Motor minutes after leaving Off-Site Kitchen with a Locals Only burger in my belly.

To compare these burgers easily, take a look at the juice that drips into your paper-lined basket while you eat. Off-Site Kitchen's burger weeps meat juices with droplets of oil interspersed in the drippings. Over at Maple &Motor, clear grease is what you'll find on your paper when you're done, indicating a more greasy and fatty burger.

Off-Site Kitchen's burger also tastes more clean and fresh, with a more strong presence of salt and fresh cracked pepper. To finish off their win, the bacon here is crisp and crunchy, while Maple & Motor's was soft and chewy. Don't judge your burgers by size, the category that Maple and Motor clearly wins, but instead, judge these burgers by flavor and the winner is easy to see.

Snuffers has the juiciest, well seasoned burger, on a poppy seed bun, with your choice of 1/4 or 1/2 lb. burger...........still the best in Dallas.  Those fresh, skin on, hand cut fries are deadly!

M&M isn't terrible, but the mood of the location always kinda puts me on edge...everyone seems really on edge.  Also $7.50 Sculpin IPA is ridiculous. They're good for a quick pick-up lazy burger night, basically. Off-Site Kitchen, on the other hand, is about as close as I get to a burger religious experience. I've fallen into the very comfortable rut of ordering a cheeseburger with an over-easy egg and some fries, and haven't been disappointed yet.

Stopped going to M&M after watching Jack pull a chair away from my friend who was 9 months pregnant so a "paying customer" (aka someone who had already paid) could sit down - it was uncomfortable for everyone, but especially embarrassing for the person forced to eat their hamburger in front of the pregnant girl. Jack is a jerk. LOVE OSK - our whole office goes there at least once a week. Nick is a nice guy, and the jalapeno relish rocks

I ate these burgers the same day with Scott. I think they're both excessively good. OSK makes me happier, but I honestly think sometimes that's because it's smaller and Ieave feeling 14 percent less terrible about myself. And Jack's ambience feels less contrived to me.

WE'LL CALL IT A DRAW.

Commence Jack tirade is 3,2 ,1.........I used to love it when we could draw that dude off sides with dumpster, and bathroom complaints!  M+M is good stuff, I'm sure if "angry" Jack knew I was in his establishment, he would have kicked my sorry butt out;  luckily I disguised myself as a frosted tip asshole-with an Affliction tshirt.  He he!

West Dallas is actually West of the river.

I like OSK's regular cheeseburger done medium rare with lettuce, tomato and onion.  No bacon and nothing fancy. Just a good old fashioned cheeseburger. I think it's (one of) the best in Dallas.

I am interested in having the same at Angry Dog being that so many people here rave about it.

Fatty and pink means more flavor. In all fairness though I've only been to OSK once and M&M about 10 times, so I do need to go back again and give another try.

The one time I ate at OSK, the bun fell apart before I was halfway through my burger.  Otherwise, a pretty tasty burger but not, IMO, better than M & M.  Limpy wimpy bun is a stupid reason to not go back, but it's not convenient to office or home, so I haven't been back.

I'd do the challenge with more-or-less, straight cheeseburgers. Adding peppers, jalapenos, bacon, etc., while delicious at times, can still throw off the overall integrity of the true burger itself.

@scottreitz @cityofate Tell me that The Chophouse burger (Arlington) is in this contest!? My fave, and I know burgers!

I eat at both places regularly, and it's hard to pick a winner from week to week.  Both are top five in my book.  Why didn't you add grilled jalapenos at M&M to make it more apples-to-apples?

Off Site should win this whole thing.

Duck and cover by the way.

@mari I stopped going to M&M after I drove all the way over from my E. Dallas home and ate the most average burger I've had in quite some time.  To each their own, but I just don't get it.  At all.

@mari Well, what was your 9 month pregnant friend doing in there and not eating? Policy is you have to pay to sit down, simple. Not that I agree with swiping a chair away from 9 month pregnant gal, but it's kind of like the Soup Nazi. You have to conform or expect to be confronted or made uncomfortable.

That place is busy as hell and they want paying customers to be able to sit and eat.

Now some of the internet rants and other semi-psychotic stuff from him is weird, no doubt.

@Twinwillow I thought you were the the guy that said "Locals Only." I ordered it for the mustard.

@TurdFerguson I ordered the Locals Only as recommended by a commenter. The chilies were applied so sparsely I only noticed the heat and not the chili flavor. Jalepenos might have given M&M some heat, but it wouldn't have fixed the other things I compared. I think it's still burgers-to-burgers.

@mgluckman They're going up against Kellers later this week.

No, you let the pregnant woman sit down.  You suspend your douchebag image-first "have to pay to sit down" policy and exercise some common decency.

@RyanD she was there to eat. she was sitting while we were standing in line.

@scott.reitz I like mustard on my burgers. As well as, ketchup and hickory sauce too.

My favorite sauce is burger "special sauce".

@G_David  @RyanD  @1dailyreader  @scott.reitz  @Twinwillow Probably, didn't phrase that correctly. But, I just think AD and Whataburger are similar in that they lack a fine-tuned precision, restaurant quality. It's not a bad thing by any means. But also reminds me of a burger that you get at a tailgate for $3.50 or when a bar opens up their patio and has a guy on a gas grill cooking them away outside. More on the homemade side of things.

Whataburger doesn't come near AD in terms of taste, no doubt. Just line all these burgers up, at their finest hours. AD and Whataburger LOOK similar, much more than the others.

G_David
G_David

@RyanD  @1dailyreader  @scott.reitz  @Twinwillow Not even close.  I haven't been able to stomach Whataburger since I was a teenager.  If your homemade burgers resemble Whataburger, something is going horribly wrong in your kitchen.

RyanD
RyanD

@G_David  @1dailyreader  @scott.reitz  @Twinwillow Angry Dog is good, no doubt. It's got more of the homemade kind of thing going on. Moreso than OSK or M&M. But if you lined all these burgers up with one another, I'd bet that AD would most closely resemble Whataburger.

G_David
G_David

@1dailyreader  @scott.reitz  @Twinwillow I've had burgers I consider the equal of the Dog, but none better.  Just depends what I'm in the mood for.  Medium rare at most.  The most maddening thing about the Angry Dog is the inconsistency of the fries, sometimes great, sometimes awful.  And it's COLD in there.
