Burrito Smackdown: Chipotle vs. Freebirds

This is the hardest smackdown I've undertaken so far. Freebirds' Texas-based burrito bomb versus the longstanding American favorite Chipotle.

In the end Chipotle just tasted better, but I wonder if I little of that has to do with the volume they handle, requiring chicken that's nearly grilled to order and other ingredients that cycle every few minutes as they process high demand during lunch and dinner rushes.

One problem I've noticed with Chipotle though are the burrito rolling skills of their line workers. The shape has gradually evolved from the traditional burrito tube shape to something that looks more like a aluminum foil wrapped pillow. The workers at Freebirds, on the other hand tightly roll their burritos so carefully they look like a beer can and can easily stand on end. I think their burritos could actually be used as a weapon.

In the end I'm more likely to eat a burrito then pummel someone with one, and the fresh taste of Chipotle is ultimately more appealing. Big money fast food or not, Chipotle makes a tasty burrito.

Freebirds only hires marijuana users and that is the reason for their superior rolling skills.

I gotta sh+t just thinking about the options!

Almost as different as Mexican and Tex-Mex food. I first consider if I want a clean fresh Chipotle carnitas white rice fajita burrito or a nice big dirty dark meat chicken monster with queso and spanish rice.

But really to compare the two is not fair to either

Disappointed you rolled with chicken and not barbacoa or carnitas. I've never been impressed with Chipotle's chicken.

I'm a Chipotle loyalist because I also like the freshness of the burrito, not being charged for sour cream, and I find the rice superior. Every now and then you get a stale-ish tortilla, but otherwise they are very consistent. I do much prefer the Freebirds rolling style, and nothing ruins a burrito more than one that busts a seam.

I had my first Chipolte experience this past week and honestly, I was not impressed. I got a chicken burrito with black beans, white rice, pico, cheese and sour cream and my wife got chicken, cheese and white rice. Mine was good but i felt like something was missing. When I tried my wife's all i tasted was the cheese.

I would rather eat at Freebirds or Qdoba (with Freebirds being my top choice of the three) honestly. I feel the other two have better tasting meats and rice and Freebirds has a  much better customer experience. I just was not a fan of Chipolte (which thanks to south park i pronounce Chip-olt-away).

Seriously, you write for a living and don't know the difference between "then" and "than"?

@Dallas_Observer Chipotle, but I'm nostalgic for the original Freebirds in Isla Vista. All those that came after pale in comparison.

There is a place in Grapevine that's as good and as big as these two, and only costs $5.00.  El Taco H at Wm. D Tate and 121/114.  They've made me the man I am today (heavy).

Actually, I eat them both with equal abandon

What I have been saying for a while is that Freebird's has more choices but Chipotle just tastes better.

I was one that flipped from Chipotle to Freebirds after the latter first appeared in Dallas several years ago.  But I have since returned the Chip-ott-lay since the quality of the ingredients at Freebirds took a very noticeable turn for the worse a while ago.

At some point in the last couple of years or less, Freebirds also made some significant changes in sizing and pricing of their burritos.  But the bottom line was that the once dependably tasty-fresh quality of Freebirds somehow vanished.  I fear it has something to do with their considerable expansion and need to cut costs.  I noticed this exact same thing with Twisted Root after they were bought out by a larger group.  That is a burger that went to pot almost overnight.

Chipotle on the other hand is about as dependable as the sunrise.  It's not the world's best burrito, but you know what you're going to get from location to location (even if you're in a different state) and the quality of the meats and veggies is always high.  I will agree with the author that the one inconsistency with Chip is the rolling of the burritos which can be maddeningly poor and ruin my day (first world pains)
