Greek Fest Is Back: Time to Gorge on Gyros, Not on Spit Roasted Lamb

Greek Fest is right around the corner, so it's time to lay out your plans for a weekend of loukoumathes, gyros and a few hundred Fix beers.

Before last year's event I talked to Mary Carter, who does PR for the event, and busted her chops about the festival's lack of spit roasted lambs. She said they' couldn't pull it off that year, but they might look into roasting whole lambs in the future. This year Carter's story is exactly the same. I'm losing hope.

It's disappointing because the lamb the festival uses for their gyro is the same processed product you'll get at any Greek restaurant in Dallas. Other cities roll out the fire pits touting large glistening hunks of meat. Dallas is missing out on the most amazing lamb smells ever.

Not that it should stop you from going. When I did a Gyro round up last winter, the sandwich served at Greek Fest was at the top of my list and I promise the recommendation only had a little to do with the cold beer and great weather. If you're not a gyro fan, there's tons of other food, including loukomathes.

Greekfest starts this Friday at 4 p.m. and runs through the weekend. For more information check out their website.

I wish there was some place to get spit roasted lamb. Sigh, how I miss it. I grew up in Ohio with a Serbian grandfather and had lamb roasts in our backyard every summer. Later, after my grandfather passed, we would go to the Croatian Campgrounds for lamb roasts with battle of the polka bands. Fun times. Sort of looked like this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XELiYkvE6A&feature=related

Food coupons = ass whipping of the highest order.  I'll pick up Lamb Souvlaki from Little Greek and organize my sock drawer.

@todd I'm not the biggest fan of tickets or coupons either, but are you bailing on the State Fair as well? Save the sock drawer for a rainy day.

@scott.reitz I've been to the Fair twice in my 20+ years living here and I'm just not that impressed with it.

Look at that pic.......that's the marrying kind........I'd let her sit home all day, get fat, eat chocolate.....cause, she sure is "purty!".  That's a little country speak, so ya'll feel at home.
