Dallas May Be The Worst Tipping City Ever, But It Probably Isn't

Way to go Dallas. You've been officially proclaimed the worst tipping city in all of Texas by our sister publication the Houston Press. Food critic Katherine Shilcutt analyzed data she pulled from Lousy Tippers, a website geared for the service industry that posts tipping statistics to publicly shame cheapskate diners. Her article lists Dallas and surrounding suburbs as king of the misers. She even called us a wretched hive of of non-tipping scum and villainy.

Lousy Tippers started recording user generated data in 2007, but has remained relatively quiet until gaining recent attention in articles on Eater, Creative Loafing in Atlanta, and most recently Eating Our Words. Lousy Tippers allows users to submit first and last names, address of the business where the tip stiffing occurred, total bill and amount of tip, and then after a basic (are you a human) math test, their submission to the database is logged.

While the DFW area has the most entries, suggesting that the city has the worst tipping population is a stretch considering the shaky design of the database and the ease at which users can enter random and incorrect data. It's just as plausible to offer that Dallas has the largest population of angry waiters who have been introduced to the website, which would account for higher entries, or that Dallas has one very bored and disgruntled 14-year-old busboy. I added a fictitious entry for a terrible customer named Timothy Toodles in less than a minute. (Sorry Dallas, I made us look worse.)

To be fair, Shilcutt admits the database is as shady as a man selling watches from the inside of a trench coat but either way diners might want to be mindful. The next time you fill out your credit card receipt and leave a crappy tip you could end up with your full name exposed in a public shaming on the website.

Note to service industry: I am a 25% tipper, but because this site exists I am going to punish all waitstaff by paying cash and tipping low.

By the way, with 3 entries from New Berlin, Wisconsin, maybe their customer service at that place just plain sucks.  That $1 tip for the $61-70 bill sounds more like the customer was giving a token tip just to piss off the server.  When service is bad, giving a very small tip is more insulting than giving no tip at all.  Of course, no server would ever admit to that.

I always give 20-25% for good service - 30% for great service.  There are some bad/cheap tippers.  But some wait staff give bad service and still expect a good tip.  Some wait staff don't seem to understand the concept of a "tip".  It is earned for good or great service - it is not a requirement.  You just can't expect to flash the bill and expect 20%.  This list of "bad tippers" doesn't address whether the service was good or not - it may have been bad.

This article doesn't address that maybe Dallas has the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE.  If they wait person didn't watch the table, took forever even to greet the customer, disappeared and took a brief vacation, left empty drink glasses, were hung over or mad from last night's binge, lazy, spent more time socializing in the back,  or just didn't care, then they didn't deserve a good tip.  Of course no wait person would ever admit to giving bad service - all wait staff would always claim to give "world class service".

I used to work in a restaurant.  I saw good and bad service first hand.  Some bad tips were richly deserved.  It was funny to hear the servers bitch about it after - then make lame excuses when their bad service was pointed out to them by their coworkers..

I have no problem tipping at least 20% for good service.  But if I'm your only station and you drop the ball numerous times, it becomes very easy for me to knock that down to 15% or less.  I know your base salary is obscenely low.   Unless you show me the gun that was pointed to your head, you chose to become a server knowing full well the salary sucked.

Regarding the list of bad tippers image, does no one think the 3 diners from New Berlin, WI. split a meal three ways?  Especially considering their total bill was identical.  If that's the case, that is a $510 tip on a $250 tab that someone is bitching about.

MY REPLY TO SCOTTS MERKIN 38 minutes ago (system keeps saying "infadel!"):

I love everyone this week!  And again, I though the best choice for me at the end of  last week was to ACTUALLY move to Colorado, and change my life.......but then the bills come crashing down like the 1977 Raiders. Last YEAR WHEN  I came back from vacay, I wanted to be a park ranger;  the year before that-A FOLK SINGER!

And seriously this commenting system is pissing me off, If I open a new tab it wont show me logged in but wont let me log in either. Then if I go back to the main page and click through it will. It so fucking annoying to click into a story and then have to use the back button every time instead of having 5 windows open for all the stories I follow

Im a 20%er but fuck man, if you suck you dont deserve it, and some of those waiters/bartenders bitching about their 10% tip might have some culpability in the shitty tips they get

The only circumstance that I'd tip less than 20% would be if the servers were aggressively rude.

@todd me thinks the idiot who entered it miskeyed and it should have been 5 not 500. An yes I bet it was a split tab at $75 in which case the tip was $15 on 75 in which case the server got his/her 20%

@ScottsMerkin This comment system pisses me off also;  especially when I'm real busy at work, and the boss needs the TPS reports NOW-I blame a Mr. JR Tone.

BTW, WTF does "_ people listening" mean?  It's a visual medium......or am I high or paint thinner?

But that takes looking at yourself , and seeing how you can become better.  With that being said, when I was 20 I could have cared less what was right, and wrong with the owe Kerg's. Also, one thing I could NEVER do, is be a waiter........I'd be in prison the first time someone beckoned a sardonic, nodding  finger.

People are kinda dicks; again, you'd have to be a freakin' moron to NOT get 20%. BUT, then, there are old ladies, church groups and book clubs that believe that 40 cents on 50 bucks is pretty good sh+T!
