100 Favorite Dishes, No. 21: Brisket Enchiladas At ME Lounge

ME lounge Brisket Enchiladas.JPG
To prepare for this fall's Best of Dallas® 2012 issue, we're counting down (in no particular order) our 100 Favorite Dishes. If there's a dish you think we need to try, leave it in the comments, or email me.

When Monica's Nueva Cocina and ME Lounge opened a few weeks ago, I was anxious to see how the longtime Deep Ellum restaurateur would interpret her new space and new menu. Fans of her old restaurant, Aca y Alla, will be happy to know her popular Mexican lasagna is still on the menu, but it's the brisket enchiladas that captured my attention when I paid the Oak Lawn restaurant a visit.

They're brisket enchiladas, and they're so much more.

Like a salad for starters. The whole plate is heaped with crunchy fresh lettuce and cotija cheese. Beneath the greens two brisket enchiladas lay under a blanket of dark, mildly spicy mole and fried potatoes, carrots and onions round out a plate that sticks to your ribs. Make sure you take it easy on the chips and salsa while you wait, or you'll never be able to finish this dish.

Dear Mr. Reitz,

Where is the enchilada?  I know that knowadays we have to overdo everything, and make sh+t totally kick ass -or better yet, EXTREME!  When the sainted Nana Kregostein made a meal, she sure didn't load a bag of cheese, a Buick, a bloodied moose, pecan encrusted pears, etc. on top.........I ask you good sir, when is enough?

@kergo1spaceship It's just lettuce & cheese on top of the enchiladas. I think the dish looks pretty appetizing.

@kergo1spaceship Good Sir Kergo, while I agree with you here, I think this dish might have quite a redeeming feature: lack of composition.  Yes, there are a lot of things going on there (perhaps too many), but at least it appears to be of the "just pile shit on the plate and eat it" school as opposed to the "single pea as an artistic statement" school.

I hear you.....the "single pea as an artistic statement"  really bugs me!  So impractical, but good for yuppie essheads. Food can be good, appealing, artistic AND delicious!
