100 Favorite Dishes, No. 57: The Burger At Local

To prepare for this fall's Best of Dallas® 2012 issue, we're counting down (in no particular order) our 100 Favorite Dishes. If there's a dish you think we need to try, leave it in the comments, or email me.

When I wanted a special occasion meal for my birthday and didn't want to break the bank, I went to Local and ordered a burger. I did this as much for the alliteration as I did for the meal itself. Who can deny "birthday burger" rolls off the tongue.

At $22, the price is steep for an American staple that often runs $2.99, but this is hardly a drive-through burger. Pasture-raised Burgundy beef makes for a flavorful patty and the kitchen's attention to detail assures it arrives just as you ordered it. I get mine juicy and charred black on the outside with a rosy red center. Is it worth 22 bucks?

Yes.

$22 for a burger? Obviously your bank is bigger than mine.

The burger is pretentious.  That's why it's my birthday burger. I actually like iceberg when it's good and fresh. It explodes in your mouth with a watery coolness no other lettuce produces.

Totally agree. Bibb, fresh spinach.... something! If there was a layer of mixed greens, then it's pretentious. But, iceberg lettuce? That's a joke.

I think iceberg is one of things that makes this an unpretentious burger, even for the price. It's refined and all that crap, with the taste of a burger you'd make at home.
