100 Favorite Dishes, No. 49: The Sloppy Taco At Off Site Kitchen

Off Site Kitchen Sloppy Taco.jpg
To prepare for this fall's Best of Dallas® 2012 issue, we're counting down (in no particular order) our 100 Favorite Dishes. If there's a dish you think we need to try, leave it in the comments, or email me.

While I wait on my petition to have Off-Site Kitchen rebranded as the Dallas Observer cafeteria, I thought I would share their second contribution to our 100 Favorites list: the sloppy taco.

The sloppy taco is a contender as much for its youthful appeal as its taste. The crunchy taco shell invokes the taco dinners your mother used to make for weeknight meals. The sweet barbecue sauce soaked meat recalls the Sloppy Joe meals (or was it Manwich) that probably graced your childhood table too. Pick the taco up and you'll even feel like a little kid: The shell is wider than your head.

Sloppy describes the way this taco eats as much as the meat that's tucked into it. Lettuce, cheese, a creamy dressing and fresh salsa make this taco a job to get through with dignity. Grab a few hundred napkins or you'll look like a toddler when you're finished eating.

At 2AM, you don't care if ANYTHING is sloppy-or missin' a leg. Last lady at the bar (you know the one!)-taken.  So what if she just puked on her shirt.

At 2AM you don't care if the Taco is Sloppy............

A taco with fries?  Isn't that like having a burger with fruit, or a hot dog and a salad?  Don't get me wrong, that taco looks incredible, and the fries delicious; but, methinks they don't go together.  Unless you are listening to Nu Metal, and rockin' out at 2AM, with the bong and yer brahhh's, and you go to Jack in the Box.......then it makes perfect sense!

I am tired of Dallas thinking they have the sloppiest taco. This taco is mediocre sloppy at best and I'd prefer to eat my cereal with liquid diamonds in a platinum bowl with a pearl spoon.

it breaks up some and it holds up some. It doesn't completely blow out but eating that taco is truly a great battle.

I never fail to pick out and order the messiest item on a menu, yet this one got by me. This must be remedied. But before I do, does the taco shell break apart at the bottom or does it hold up really well?
