Chili Dog Smackdown: Angry Dog Versus St. Pete's

When two, seemingly similar dishes you've eaten in the past compete in your memory, it can be difficult to tell them apart. Eat them side by side , however, and the differences stand out like a brisket sandwich in a vegan smoothie shop. In City of Ate's Smackdown we endure back to back tastings so you don't have to. The winner is always as clear as consume.

On Commerce Street in Deep Ellum, St. Pete's Dancing Marlin and Angry Dog compete for the neighborhood's love of chili-laden bar food. The hot dog topped with Texas red looks pretty similar in pictures, but the differences are apparent as soon as you plunge in with your fork. (And you'll need a fork.)

While chili and other toppings are certainly subjective, the quality of these two hot dogs couldn't be more straightforward. Angry Dog makes use of a run-of-the mill food service wiener, while St. Pete's goes high-end, offering up a locally made hot dog from Rudolph's. The link is big, smoky and flavorful with a snappy casing and that it costs 50 cents cheaper seals the deal.

You can pick up Pete's. But never on a first date.

Used to likey the big-bite...but they changed from grade-f meat based chili to some kind of soy based chili....If'n I'm eating a dog, I don't be needing no ding dang fake chili.
