100 Favorite Dishes, No. 97: Jalapeno Poppers at City Tavern

Jalepeno Popper.jpg
To prepare for this fall's Best of Dallas® 2012 issue, we're counting down (in no particular order) our 100 Favorite Dishes. If there's a dish you think we need to try, leave it in the comments, or email me.

Too often, bar snacks are relegated to frozen staples, dropped in a deep fryer till they're golden brown and delicious edible. When a bar takes the time to hand-craft a deep-fried treat it's hard not to notice.

Hand-crafted Jalapeno poppers can be had at the Free Man, but the kitchen leaves the seeds inside the pepper before stuffing them with cheese. The results are so hot I watched a man turn pink while trying to force his way through a plate.

At City Tavern, though, the kitchen does their best to remove most of the seeds and ribs. The poppers are still spicy enough to make you pause about half way through a plate, but mild enough that you'll live to tell about it.

Seriously, is that the world's largest jalapeño or a ridiculously tiny hand?

Picture makes it look like it's a foot long. Which would be a good thing.

i tried these.  the pepers had that limp consistency that you can only get fresh out of a freezer.

I see what you did there with the misspelling. I checked their menu, then I chuckled a bit.

The menu on their website says this about the "Stuffed Jalepenos" for $6.95: "These ain't poppers. Whole, fresh jalepenos stuffed w/ chicken, cheese and spices."

Yes, it says "jalepenos" twice. No, I don't know why they can't spell.

My super sleuth skills tell me cheese and chicken might be likely culprits. I'm known to be a bit of a spy however. Don't tell anyone!
