Vapiano in Mockingbird Station Closes (UPDATED)

VipianoDiningRoom.jpg
Vapiano

UPDATE: Earlier we sent an email Tim McCallum, owner of Vapiano, asking if they might open back up. "We hope so, we will send out info when we do," McCallum replied.

Vapiano at Mockingbird Station has, to put it delicately, closed. Or, if one were to read the sign on the door, they might say the restaurant got its ass evicted. Really, it's just matter of semantics. Either way, it seems things just didn't work out.

In 2010, the neighborhood kids at SMU crowned this fast-casual Italian spot with good drink and pizza specials as "Best New Restaurant." And in 2009 they were named one of the "Hot New Concepts" by Nations Restaurant News.

But part of the concept never seemed to connect with customers: They employed a seemingly unnecessary payment system where customers were given a plastic card after ordering then paid with the card on the way out.

This German-owned concept has corporate offices in McLean, Virginia, and hasn't returned our call for more insight. Mockingbird Station is mum as well, other than the lock out notices taped to the front doors.

We should all feel bad for the family and staff involved in this because the family is probably hurting more than a couple of employees who didn't get there 50 dollars. And Lauren Davis..you sound like a real bitch. You should just stop writing because you suck! Vapianos food was better than your stories.

You're a conniving slime ball. You stole from all the employees and even the owner. You stole tips and deposits and gave young girls free drinks and TRIED to take THEM home. I think your story is backwards. You also took home bottles of alcohol on the owners dollar! It was really sad/funny seeing young girls look at you like you where a child molesters when you tried to pick them up, you are a petofile and a thief. So fuck off and get a life. Creep ass.

Being one of the original employees and opener of the dallas location I strongly agree with you. Even having talked to him and making suggestions, he neglected to keep a strong staff and labor to handle busy rushes. He also bullshitted me right to my face the whole time I worked there whenever I talked to him. Im sorry you had to deal with him and losing out on your investment. The place had such potential that was ruined by a terrible shady owner.

I love how TM, Tim McCallum tries to skirt over and hide from the Ritz comment from StephinUptown.  "we had a group of people who worked, owned, and managed the vapiano at different times"; There was one owner and that was Tim.  The Ritz was the place that he went to virtually every weekend, and of which he boasted constantly about the beautiful women he was meeting and persuing.  Anyone that met Tim got an ear full of "I'm the owner".  You swindled your investors, stole from your employees, cheated them out of their last check including your manager Stephen who moved from DC and who worked for you for years.  You cheated on your wife in the restaurant!!!!  Right in front of us.  You are a bad person, period!!!

I worked for Tim McScumbag for about a year.  He was not only the biggest jerk that I have ever worked for but, he blatently cheated on his wife with a blonde that had a love for the brand Lois wine.  Thats right Tim, we all even knew the wine type.  He did it many times and every time it made me sick!!!  His wife Jennifer is a really nice lady and she did not deserve that.  He is straight up a bad person across the board.  I hope she has the good sense to move on without him as we all did.  Sorry for the people that stuck around which he has NEVER paid!!!

The best part is the fine print on their card that says you have to pay some ridiculous price ( I think $50) if you happen to lose the card while at the restaurant.

The owner met my friend and I at the Ritz, we've actually seen him out a few times around Dallas, and he probably told us 100x that he owned this place...which we've never heard of. We let him buy us a drink as he was just trying so hard to take my friend home. It almost worked with all the big talk about his business(s). Guess now he will have to find another pick up line. Oh Dallas men.

I've eaten at the one in DC and it was fantastic. The card-tab concept was not strange at all (even when on a date), and it was nice not having to pay at each station. But I was extremely disappointed in the Dallas location--the chefs were slow, and either the restaurant didn't have standard procedures or these chefs weren't good. On my penne arrabiata, the Dallas chef dumped in a ton of white onion to make it spicy (which didn't work and was just overbearing), whereas the DC chef executed it perfectly. Not sure why they didn't do it the same, or why it took the Dallas chef 10 minutes to make such an uninspired dish when the DC crew cranks out two meals at a time and in under 5 minutes each (you stand and wait for it in DC; in Dallas you sat down and could finish pre-dinner drinks by the time it was ready). I'd like to be disappointed that it's gone, but I'm not because it was so bad compared to DC.

As an investor (sorry to say) of this particular restaurant...I felt the concept was good.  However, the manager (owner) was not.  Business is simple- take care of your employees and they will take care of you and your customers.  Treat employees with respect and they will return the favor.  Having personal insight on how this company was run and how the owner failed to pay bills or obligations was sad.  It was truly my worst investment.

I will finish by saying the other Vapiano Locations in DC and Virginia are outstanding...I'm sadden to see that many other investors trusted this operator with our money, and he wasted it because he does not know how to run a business.  This isn't his first failure, and will not be his last if he finds more individuals to trick into making investments in him.

I went there once, the place was a total cluster fuck, nobody got their food at the same time (the only commonality being long waits) and none of the staff really seemed to care. And then the stupid card system could have been tolerated if the service didn't blow. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Always tried going by this place later in the evening, it was always closed. Hopefully they'll put in a decent restaurant in that location that'll keep later hours on weeknights/weekends..

It was a cool concept. Reminded me of time spent in Berlin. The food was terrible, though. I was wondering when it would close.

Huh, I liked the looks of the place the one time I went in. What is this payment system all about? Sounds very wacky. Anyone have a link to the plastic card payment company's site. I'd like to see the reasoning for that.

@VapianoCustomer  You are obviously clueless!   This Douche bag owner was in Germany staying in his apartment and partying it up the day of the Vapianos closing. He was well aware that the doors were going to be closed and so was his "family"

The 50 dollar employees you speak of probably needed that money and they had no heads up from the bald asshole that the landlord was locking the doors that day.

Tim was notified 30 days prior they were closing the doors.  He also stole the 6,000 dollar margarita machine and if his wife is reading this, Your husband has had several affairs and two are happening in Germany....   Her name is Annie

@Themexicanleprechaun1  Tim McCallum is extremely shady and has a track record of failed businesses.  He brags about how he ran for congress but when he told me that story I was thinking " this guys an asshole and probably takes it in the ass too"

He ran for congress because he thinks he is a good liar.

....and we had a group of people who worked, owned, and managed the vapiano at different times and we are still working through this situation.  We could not control every situation, but please know we have families, friends, children and loved ones who are going through this with us.  We ask you all to respect that and remember, myself and the rest of our partners and employees are real people, and good people, and would ask that you respect our privacy please. Business is Business of course, and we all have the right to share our thoughts and opinions on the food, how we managed, and what we thought of our experiences, but please let us all go through this with our families without making it personal or slanderous or hurting our loved ones. We appreciate it very much.  And to our frequent customers...thank you! You made vapiano a great place eat and made it a great place to work.

I am the principal owner of the Dallas VAPIANO. And while we are in deed going through a difficult situation we spent our time trying to serve our great customers and create a quality dining establishment in dfw. I can not comment on all the business issues at this time, but I will say a few things that I can address. With an exception, we had great partners, great employees and great customers. We had our strongest growth in 3 years over the last several months and

Curious, who was the owner? I met a couple of guys who claimed to be the owner.

Jschaefer

Hey, this is JS again.  I was just called by one of the former managers of this place and told the owner of this particular restaurant was bashing me as the investor.  He told me that the former owner stated that I was the only investor unhappy with this investment.  Let me tell you that I was not unhappy investing in the restaurant.  I was unhappy with my investment with this individual who ran the investment.

The sad thing is that the people who worked there to pay rent and car payments were good people trying to make a dollar to live.  It was alleged that the owner stole their tips, and before he was kicked out he actually stole the art that was in the store.  Furthermore, he took the investors money and traveled to Germany for a vacation while not paying the staff their final paycheck.  That is sad, and gives business owners a bad name.  I am an owner of 3 business (one of them nationwide) and I have always paid my employees first before I took a dime.

This is sad, but anyone who knows this owner should be aware.  He also tried to Flag my post so the social community would not see the post.  The owner cannot hide from the truth.  He also needs to wake up because the community will learn more about him if he does not go hide into a hole!

He has made too many enemies who are ready to destroy him.  He did another bad job with another company.  I encourage anyone who knows about how he was treating employees and others to express their opinions.  Those of you who know me are welcome to call me, and I will give you more information.

Again, Vapiano Corporate provided a cool concept.  The owner of this store destroyed it and used it as his own personal piggy bank.

Mark, you didn't pay with the card they gave you, it was more of a tab.  You used your regular credit/debit card or cash to pay for the meal.

Let's tap the brakes a little bit. They are 4-7 and the East is a mess with Baltimore in the lead. It's only April 18th, long way to go here.

If that game was in Arlington and the Rangers were getting their butts spanked like that then the place would have been empty and all the local TVs would have been off.

The crowd reactions to the Josh, Beltre and Cruz homeruns in the 8th was amazing. They were in awe.

Quote from Tim McCallum in the above comment: "myself and the rest of our partners and employees are real people, and good people, and would ask that you respect our privacy please." Wait, if you really are a good person (HA that's a joke) you cannot even pay the staff that YOU laid off because you're an incredibly AWFUL restaurant owner? A "good person" would not be cheating on his wife blatantly at the restaurant either, would he? I am a past employee and heard you did not even have the common courtesy to pay the staff, all of whom are now unemployed because you're an idiot, their last paycheck. I cannot say I am surprised whatsoever because, quite frankly, you're a total jerk. Sell one of your two cars and pay your employees just as they deserved to be paid.

As a past employer, I can vouch for the fact that Tim McCallum is a complete ASSHOLE who did not care for a single customer or employee (obviously proven by the fact he neglected to pay each of them their last paychecks). I was not fired, nor do I have any negative attitudes toward any other employee, but I could go on about Tim for days. I am positive any bus-boy or dishwasher who did not receive that last check is in great financial struggle right now as you drive around in your Range Rover, or the beamer...take you're pick.

@Imfoxxi   Foxi or Tim Wife.... Yes your husband cheats on you.

He has a girlfriend in Germany hence the apartment and Tim has had multiple encounters in Dallas this year. At his last company he carried on a 2 year affair behind your back.   Most people think you two are either swingers or you have your own thing on the side.   There's a reason he won't let you look at his phone.   Happy Holidays!

@xemployee Tim knew the doors were being shut that day and this is why he cleared the art in the restaurant prior to the landlord locking him out.  Tim is not a leader he is a follower with a weird build.  The guy is meant to sit in a cubicle and manage shelf space, he is in no way capable of running a business or leading a team.  Tim is a dork

Maybe they thought you would be more likely to purchase more by having an open tab vs. paying at time of order. You know add a dessert or another tasty beverage before paying.
