Dallas' Five Best Fried Chicken Meals

Categories: Best Of Dallas

Korean Fried Chicken Tto.jpg
I once paged through a diet book that listed foods as good and bad. Salads dressed with not too sweet and not too fatty dressing were good. Steamed or boiled shrimp was good. According to the book you could eat as much of the good stuff as you wanted. Bad foods like pizza and burgers had to be consumed in moderation. And fried chicken? It was listed as something you should never, ever consume.

So if you're going to eat something that will literally stick to your hips (not to mention your arterial walls), you better make sure it's the absolute best version you can get your greasy fingers on. Here are our five favorite spots for fried chicken, including this year's winner for Best of. We're sure you'll agree with all of them, but just in case, make your case in the comments. And get more of our favorites on the Best Of app, available for iPhones and Droids.

I'm still dreaming about this Carrollton spot's chicken. The Korean version may not align with traditional southern fried chicken convention, but who cares? The stuff is good, and the beer is cheap.

Bubba's
Food and Wine lists Bubba's Cooks Country among the nation's greatest fried birds. The restaurant submitted a fried chicken shot so hot it made the lead picture for the online slideshow.

Babe's
Hanna Raskin, my predecessor, wrote of Babe's fried chicken in a post detailing her last five meals in Dallas: "Its juicy meat encased in a salty coat of brittle fry -- is phenomenal. I'm equally fond of the creamed corn, mashed potatoes and white gravy, all of which usually end up pooled in a magnificent heap of comfort." And look at the rolls you can get for gravy soppin'

Lauren checked out Pollo Campero last fall and said it was the best dang chicken leg she'd ever had. The batter was full of spices (which are secret, of course), but not slick with grease, and juicy meat fell off the bone.

Oddfellows
Sous vide fried chicken? Why the hell not? Each bite is tender and juicy, and the cooking method cuts down on time spent waiting for your order. Naturally raised chickens are employed in this Oak Cliff eatery so while your heart may be laden with oil, your conscience can remain guilt free.

Until Frenchy's magically shows up in Dallas, or Big Momma's reopens anything else is pretty much a waste.

Rudy's gets my vote. But my husband went to the doctor and got that gloom doom talk about how he was overweight, had diabetes, high blood pressure and wouldn't live to see his children grow up.  Got my man so upset he left the doctor's office and went straight to Popeye's to recover. Sometimes you just need ya fix.

Pecan Lodge serves up really good fried chicken.  Cooked to order.

I am amazed I don't see Buttons and their signature Chicken and Waffles on the list.  By the crowds indulging in this treat, it is certainly the most popular.

So happy Pollo Campero made the list. Since I've been Wintering in Minnesota, I recently discovered one up here and was so excited to pee. These northern people think fried chicken is something you get at a chinese buffet.....

I've heard the fried chicken at Private Social is sous vide in duck fat before it is fried.  I don't know if it's true and I haven't tried it but I'm intrigued so it's on my "Food Hit List."

Lately, I've been doing the drive-thru at Popeye's on Ross for my spicy fried chicken fix. There and back within 10 minutes! Hell, I've even driven over in my skivvies! Not fancy but, fast, tasty, and, cheap.

Bubba's and Babe's are the same are they not?

I will never understand the appeal of Babe's. Their fried chicken is no better than the shit you can get at the deli of any grocery store. The one in Carrollton is a wood building with wierd singing waitresses. I felt like I was having Sunday lunch at the Branch Davidian compound. I ate my entire meal in a three point stance so I would be ready to bail out the second that I smelled smoke.

Pecan Lodge makes some damn fine fried chicken.

Babes meats (except the smoked chicken) are great, the biscuits are sublime, but everything else there is almost inedible

I believe Rick's Chop House in the square in downtown McKinney pan fries their brined chicken. Served with a corn/pea succotash and mashed potatoes. Strong to quite strong - especially if you live in the 972.

Can't believe you guys left off Jonathan's in Oak Cliff. He has the best fried chicken and waffles I have ever had. Much better than Babe's.

I got the friend chicken at Oddfellows the other day and it was quite disappointing. Maybe it was just a fluke that day.

Good idea. Think I'll head to Babe's in Garland, since I have the afternoon free to recover :) They put out both honey & sorghum for those rolls, by the way. Might wind up with CFS, though.

What... what is that a picture of?  It look like that thing that I mangled enroute to Mena Saturday.  Don't eat it, just bury it and stick flowers by it's headstone-sir.

Ahhh, fried chicken, the international food of the Deep South......"git yer" overall's on.  Daddy said the biggest con on man is taking the worst part of the chicken, and "thowin' bread crumbs on it, and THEN selling it to folks!  Methinks the same person who loves this dish, pays $15.00 per pound for Crawfish-at a Mardis Gras parade?  Biscuits-yes.  Mash taters-yes.  Fried chicken (and I know ya'll "caint' live without it)..................._________________.

ps-"Imma run up to the holler, and mama gonna ring the dinner bell when fried chicken ready"-Chan Gailey.  "Fried Chicken, it's what Dodge Man is having for dinner"-Sam what's his name, the guy that was in Roadhouse, that does the Ram commercials.  "Don't hire a fake, out of town chef to zook zer (cook your) zicken (chicken)-Mick Mamis. "I need to keeeeep my men busy, I will give you a free piece of checken"-Avery AC Guy.  "I approve of chicken"-Ralph Hall. Come to the gweat state of twexas of have my fwabulous fwied chwicken"-Dale Wammstead.

Hum... Before the Food Network, did anyone ever really know what sous vide cooking was, bragged about it and then popularized it? I mean, SPAM is pretty well "cooked" sous vide....

Ben there at the urging of friends and it just wasn't good enough to put up with the loudness of the room and the "happy birthday" songs the wait staff sings to the poor folks unfortunate enough to be there.

the appeal of Babe's went away when they opened a joint in every city in North Texas.  The original was the best.  Id rather drive to Decatur to eat at Sweetie Pie's than eat at the babes in my neighborhood
