Five Dallas Coffee Shops to Help Break Your Starbucks Habit

Categories: Brews News

As Alice mentioned earlier, Starbucks announced Tuesday that they are raising the cost on some of their products. A "tall" or 12-ounce coffee will increase by 10 cents to $1.85.

But why drink Starbucks anyway? Here are five better local coffee shops, no matter the cost.

5. Mercantile Coffee House. (See above) If downtown is your thing, Mercantile Coffee should be your stop for a hand-brewed cup for less than 'Bucks: $1.75. They use the Intelligentsia Brand of coffee that garners them a loyal following, and they also carry goods from Empire Baking Company.

4. Murray Street Coffee Shop in Deep Ellum will set you up with an honest strong cup for $2. This eclectic spot hosts live music and local art work with ample space to lounge.

3. Oaklawn Coffee. This independent and locally focused coffee house gets its magical beans from Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters, and a cup cost $1.89. (Until recently it was Urban Dog Coffee, but it recently remodeled and rebranded.)

2. Oddfellows. In the heart of the Bishop Arts District, Oddfellows uses Cuvée coffee beans roasted in Austin. Their coffee is the priciest at $2.85.

1. The Pearl Cup: One of the most brilliant cups of coffee you'll find in Dallas, the Cup's signature blend coffee is a custom mix of Indonesian, African and Latin American beans. A small is $2. But the warm fuzzies you'll get at this great spot are priceless. Besides, Starbucks baristas would never make you a froth flower.

Is this a copy cat of those in the NorthWest? The outside is not very attractive, not sure about the inside either. At least no more snow cones with horrible water taste, so Mr. Michael, I'm hoping that burnt flavor you tasted is not a consequence of the water!  :O

Well, I stopped by to get 3 coffees and they didn't have cup holders... I ended up taking one and it was pretty bad, I asked for whole milk latte and they poured 2% milk. If you don't know how to run a coffee shop, don't do it until you train your self as owner... Anyone can copy, but to say you have the best coffee in town is a pure lie...

Well... I am not surprised this coffee shop closed in less than 3 months. Baristas with no coffee experience... No marketing, no grand opening, the coffee wasn't great and you never knew if they were opened or closed. You can't run a business, just by copying others... The owner had no coffee & business experience and lack of marketing made it much more difficult...Opening a few hours a day and some days a week is not going to make a profitable business. I talked to one of the baristas and they were so dissapointed because the owner Trina told them they were going to make a lot of money!!! Seriously??? Why would you promise something like that to those girls... How can they make good money, if there are no customers? 75% of the plaza is empty and the coffee stand itself lacked visual design... No one can stop in this plaza, because it is wrongly designed to enter from the North Side... Seriously, did this owner expected to make lots of money there? If a ice cone business didn't make it, what made this owner think it was going to compete with Starbucks just down the street? Let alone so many business in the same avenue that sell much better coffee that theirs??? Well, I hope the owner learned and next time does its due diligence and full research before opening what was a failure from the beginning...

To be honest the coffee wasn't great, it had a terrible burn taste... My QT coffee is much better than that...  On my way to the office I thought I stop by, but I wasted too much time accessing the place, because is on the wrong side of the street!  Good luck to you, but seems that plaza is haunted. Just a few shops here and there and I see them come and go...

A hot new coffee shop with sexy baristas is now open in North Richland Hills.  The coffee is great! and prices are good.  Latte & Lace is located at 6244 Rufe Snow Dr.

i have to give White Rock Coffee some love too... but overall we have some really kickass coffee places in Dallas to choose from...and ALL of them are much better quality than Starbucks.

There are "some", but after a trip to Austin, where there are LOTS, I would say we are still short a LOT

Where's Opening Bell? I'm all for going anywhere but Starbucks.  But no list of the top coffee shops in Dallas is complete without Opening Bell.  They have great coffee and food.  Pascale, the owner is wonderful.  Plus, it's the best venue in town for live singer/songwriter music...which has nothing to do with the point of the article I suppose...but we need some South Side love here, is all I'm sayin

Where's McCafe at??? Can't get no clown love up in here!!! that's all i'm saying

I just throw a couple scoops of the instant variety into my morning bowl of fruit loops and i'm off to the races!

Opening Bell Coffee should be on this list as well!

Let's not forget Drip on Lovers Lane. Maybe not as "sophisticated" as some but, their coffee is excellent.

Picture the scene:

twinwillow in a tiny cafe with French music playin'.  sitting with a turn of the centry one piece bathing suit.  curly 1920's mustache filled with wax.  eating a cwoysaant (croissant), and drinking a fine, warm mug of joe.

7-11 has excellent coffee for round a buck.....ya'll can spend the rest of yer money on a book about avoiding another recession. Better yet, spend an hour outside, instead of at some fruity coffee joint.  Jes sayin'!.

The American Dream consists of life, liberty and happiness; not a bunch of doughy fruits in some urban coffee joint.

The price is great, but their coffee taste like crap.

Fruity drinks.  Enough said.  Fruity; drinks.  fruity, drinks.  Fruit...then drinking..........boy you are NOT the sharpest tool in the shed are you?  Let me put it this way; drinks made out of fruit.  Ahh, forget it!  Have the 3rd grade teacher explain.

Just because you like it, doesn't make it good. Oh and the reverse snob meme is really old. It predates the intraweb!

What?  I'm confused by this weird humor-sir. It's neither funny or poignant.

so you are saying you still can't figure out of a link is spoofed, either?  Did you just start surfing the web?  Are you still using IE?

And by the way - you can't have a Lemon Party with Old Dick (Lemon)

Best coffee in town for people that actually have to get shit did.

Kergo 1 Spaceship

Best way to get "shit did" is to brew it in a home coffee maker, and fly.  See, this way you don't have to drive out of the way, or listen to some barista tell a GRAND story.  See, you actually save a few steps to get "shit did.

It takes me less time to stop at the 7-11 on the way, fill a cup, leave the money on the counter if there's a line, and drive away than it does for me to brew a pot.  I guess if i got one of them automatic-timed thingers it would help, but I'm a habitual over-sleeper. I hardly ever shower. My friends call me stinky.

Rosetta.  The froth flower is called a rosetta.

Also, don't forget Cultivar Cafe over with Good-2-Go Taco.  Yes, it's in a taco shop, but the coffee is killer.
