Eatzi's Roasted Vegetable Sandwich: A Sando That Doesn't Suck on a Meatless Monday

Categories: Eat This

Yes, I realize it would be better with a steak on it.
I think I'm getting into the groove. My first hurdle with meatless Monday was just remembering that today was Monday, and I wasn't supposed to eat meat on Mondays. (What day is it again?) I solved that with a calendar reminder that goes off every Monday morning and says, "It's Meatless Monday, Dipshit."

Now that I don't forget about the pledge I'm spending my time learning how to pick dishes that don't suck. I had a Margherita Pizza from Cane Rosso last week that was good, and today I went to Eatzi's to construct a meatless sandwich that would quell my inner carnivore.

They offer roasted vegetables as a stuffing, and with a basil cream-cheese spread and a slice of provolone it's a pretty satisfying sandwich. Just follow these steps to avoid some pitfalls. Nick Rallo and I has some wildly different sandwich experiences despite ordering the exact same thing.

Don't let the guy behind the counter dice up your veg. They won't stay put and you'll end up with a lap full of ratatouille when you eat. Make sure to go nuts with the toppings, too; you're trying to make a sandwich that really satisfies instead of something that feels like a consolation prize. And finally, make sure they ring it up right. Nick's sandwich stamped "Veg Sandwich" cost him $3.99. Mine, stamped "Regular Sandwich," cost $6.59.

Boo.

Anyone else giving up meat one day a week? Or we the only morons trying this?

I know it's a chain, but Bakers Bros. has a pretty darn good veggie sandwich too. Get it with a side of their black bean chili, and you've got a pretty hearty Meatless Monday meal.

Heck no Meatless Monday is for Dipshits! =)

I'll eat a meatless meal any time but when I do it is because it's what I happen to want at the time.  But good for you for making a commitment and sticking to it.

I tried the Green House Food Truck Portobello sandwich (NOT a sando) last week, it that's quite nice it was big hardy and very satisfying.

Greenz in Uptown has plenty of meatless options and an AHHHMAZING asparagus soup.

And since you're so close, also you really need go to Cosmic Cafe.

you can say "sanch", or "sainch", but please don't ever say "sando".

The easiest way to go meatless on Mondays is to go to Highland Park Cafeteria, Luby's or Furr's. You couldn't possibly eat all the vegetables and bread and roll options they serve. My personal favorite is Highland Park Cafeteria in Casa Linda Plaza.Had a delicious, inexpensive lunch there today. But, I had a salmon croquette with my vegetables.

Good grief, how hard is it to eat a meatless meal? Try some tostadas. Or nachos. Or a taco salad with grilled veggies instead of meat (like I do at Uptown Bar and Grill) Or cheese fries (sans the bacon bits). You can get this shit all over town, and in any little "sports bar", it's easy! You can substitute almost anything meat with grilled veggies.

I've been trying for a few weeks. Screwed up the first one (wings), but have been really good since. Today was some oatmeal before leaving the house and hummus for lunch. Still have one meal to go, though...this is the trap meal.

Dude, I totally almost went there for the exact same thing last week, but doubted my resolve against their excellent selection of meats.  Mmmm prosciutto.  $4 is a bargain though, I'll be hitting that up for sure.

I eat plenty of meatless meals, but I don't consciously try to do it one day a week. Some days it just happens.

I'm curious about this comment. Is it framed as a question about the over all content of the post, as in... Why the hell are you writing about not eating meat? Or is it a curiosity as to why so many people would have difficulty embracing meatless Monday?

I would think many places that peddle wings would be difficult to navigate. I think the best bets I've seen so far are with ethnic cuisines that are inherently low on meat out of necessity . Indian, and Middle Eastern restaurants are great places to cut back.

Oh, Ethiopian too.

The Thai place near me has been my go-to dinner destination the past couple Mondays. Pad prik king is pretty awesome.
