Zaguan's Sandwich: Elevated Desk Fare For a Hurried Lunch

Categories: Eat This

I love eating lunch out. I like long, luxurious mid-day meals with wine and a course or three, with coffee for dessert. But who's got time for that? I admit, now that I eat for a living I indulge myself way more often than I used to, but deadlines are deadlines, and I often find myself eating out of Styrofoam at my desk.

Not that there's anything wrong with that -- especially with Zaguán Bakery close by. I've been pummeling their arepas, the flat corn cakes stuffed with all sorts of fillings, on a bi-weekly basis since I got here.

The namesake sandwich, though, is one of the best takeout dishes I've had in a while. The standard option comes with shredded beef and sweet onions, served with melted Swiss cheese and mayonnaise, but they'll sub warm chunks of chicken breast coated in tomato sauce.

The bread seals the deal. It has a decent crust that's tough and blistered and stands up to warm fillings where other loaves might go limp. Makes me want to smuggle a bottle of wine into the office and have an espresso machine installed near my desk. Even a quick meals can be decadent.

Love the ropa vieja with black beans, yellow rice, fried plantains, and a over easy egg. At $13, it's not a lunch I do often, but well worth it when I do.

I went years ago and was not impressed enough to go back. It was just - I don't know - dry?

YUMMY! ZAGUAN rocks! I haven't tried that sandwich, but it looks like I need to.

You're right, their bread is amazing (as is most anything that comes out of their bakery).  The Ham & Cheese Cojitos (sp?) are my favorite thing there, it's basically a yeast bread with ham and cheese baked inside. It is pure greatness and is inexpensive too.  I'm also a big fan of their verbena tea.

If you do eat there, the service is not great (they're wayyyyyy slow, and often make mistakes with orders like bringing out smoothies instead of a fruit salad, perhaps its a language barrier, IDK), but they are such good people and the food is so good makes it totally worth while.

I was totally turned off by the crappy service I received the one time I've been there.  It went beyond crappy - I was totally ignored by the two waiters.  When I finally got up (after waiting 10 minutes with no one acknowledging me) to get a menu, the waitress took an identical menu, handed it to me and took the one that I had taken from the front of the place for walk-ins.  The identical menu.  It went downhill from there.

I'm overdue for a Zaguan visit, thanks for the reminder... A cachapa and an espresso makes for a damn fine breakfast.  The free wi-fi is a plus.

Damn, Jon. Am I the only person in Dallas who hasn't been to Zaguan? I pass it all the time. What a great looking menu. And, empanadas, too!I'm definitely going for lunch one day this week.
