The Chesterfield Opens Downtown with Swanky Food and Drinks (Photos)

Categories: First Look

The Chesterfield opened this week at 1404 Main St. in downtown Dallas. Deep burgundy couches and velvet armchairs along with brass chandeliers and a dark-wood bar gives this mixology den a distinguished, swank feel. With an "official" capacity of less than 50, the narrow restaurant and bar is cozy and intimate by mandate.

A creation of Eddie "Lucky" Campbell and Ed Bailey, the concept of this spot is centered around "The Golden Age of Cocktails." The drink menu runs 11 pages with a liver-boggling assortment of concoctions. The page titled "Hard Knox" (see photo below) lists eight drinks, including one called Oswald's Corridor that has Maker's Mark, Punt e Mes, Cherry Herring, sugar and absinthe. The Promiscuous Lady has Famous Grouse Scotch, honey, orange, cinnamon tincture and Angostura. When you sit down, order a rum and Coke to sip on while you peruse the options. They love that.

The food menu is more focused, but less intense under chef Michael Elhert, formerly of DBGB in NYC, a bistro creation of Chef Daniel Boulud. Working from the tiny kitchen in the back of the restaurant, Elhert has created a menu that is new-American, anchored in classical technique. Dinner plates include baby artichokes barigoule with fried capers and lemon, green falafel with harissa and tahini, chorizo empanadas with roasted peppers, whole fish, and a handmade tagliatelle "carbonara." For lunch, the menu features sandwiches like The L.E.S., which is house-made pastrami and sauerkraut with Gruyere cheese and Russian dressing on toasted rye.

Parking is tricky. There are metered spaces during the week, but on the weekend, the best bet is carpooling and finding a spot in a garage, paying for one of the many valets along the street or DART.

"We're trying to get some parking," Campbell says. "There are parking garages around and also some valets up and down Main Street. The key is you're only parking once. You can park and hit four or five different places. Make an entire night out of it. The city is also putting in new trolley lines to make it easier to get to downtown."

In terms of the scene, The Chesterfield will pull in a lot of the downtown crowd.

"These lofts around here are 98 percent full," Campbell says. "The downtown community are such loyalists, it's such a pleasure to have them come in here. It's like downtown has risen from the ashes. I feel like we're in the midst of a downtown rebirth. The downtown community has been so supportive that it brings me to tears."

If we wanted to attend another Sfuzzi, we would go there.  Downtown is not the place to bring in asshattery. PLEASE!!  That is for uptown and if I wanted that, I would reside in uptown vs. downtown.  I am with you, Steve!!  Downtown has a different soul than the pretentious shit asses that are looking to get your no or get their dub step dj on come 10pm which by no mean at the cost of you enjoying a late night dinner in peace, or so you thought.  I hope Chesterfields remains in tact and provides the venue downtown so needed.  Next up, hopefully a wine and cheese bar, bike shop, unique coffee shop ....wait, am I making my Christmas list.  Downtown should be original.

I can't wait to check it out tonight!  So excited to have the honor of getting an amazing drink served by Lucky!

To "Kergie" and Scruffie and anybody else who judges books by their cover before tasting the stuff. Ah, Why?

I haven't been there. You haven't been there? What IS the point.

I want to go there now because of you!?!!

I like it.

My only issue is the 11 page drink menu. I can't even decide what kinda socks to wear on the daily.

Something tells me 0 of the commenters here live south of Woodall.

Pretty funny to read a bunch of North Dallas residents calling other places uncool.

Neu-Mixology + Sullivan's - Credibility x [Nik Richie] = The Chesterfield.

Actually, the architecture materials used are interesting."The walls (made with bricks salvaged from the Great Chicago Fire), the floors (made with wood from an 1870 Carolina farm home) and the massive chandeliers all give the bootlegging-in-Atlantic-City vibe your Old Fashioneds require."

That's a $10 Old Fashioned. I will have to try one of those. My judgement of this place will hinge on that drink.

Holy crap, this place fits the criteria of my rant yesterday to a T.

City of Ate will spooge all over it for weeks.

The debut of Kerg's 3.0: Wow, this a great story!  I really enjoy the tones and hues of the establishment; both warm, and inviting.  The menu seems just dreamy, and the staff wonderful-and exciting!  Me and my friends, Biff, Jed and Cliff are going to have a cup of upscale coffee, and then head over to this wonderful place.  The whole while singing X-mas tunes, and waving with X-mas cheer to all passers by.  The old Kerg's would make fun of that staff pic, but, new Kerg's 3.0 finds them absolutely charming. Go Dallas Food!

Regards,    3.0

Merry Christmas Guys!

Sweet baby Jeebus my eyes! Seriously, the best interior concept they could come up with was "tacky 1970's steak house"? It looks like a mash-up of an Old San Francisco Steak House and the cocktail lounge of the Ramada Inn - Des Moines (Airport). The interior desecrator responsible for this should have their ASID membership revoked.

It looks and seems fantastic.....until I see yet another Goddamned, Motherfucking Douchebag in a Goddamned, motherfucking fedora.

What is it with all of these fucking douche-cock dickheads?  No parents??  Never been around Men?   I bet they play fucking hip-hop starting at midnight, or some horseshit.

Every place doesn't have to be a fucking dick hole.  Jesus fucking Christ, Dallas, pull your goddamned head out of your asshole.

I agree with you on downtown.  As I've noted here many times, I have little interest in anything north of Woodall.

The Chesterfield is a cool place, started by a guy who totally gets downtown.  The Chesterfield - unlike Plush and Ten - is a great neighbor to City Tavern and a great addition to downtown.

You'd have to cross reference a post I made on Wednesday as a reply to someone else to figure out how I judged this book by the cover. So kudos if you did, otherwise, STFU.

Plus pictures kind of count as cracking open the book. Oh, and your opinion isn't more valid than anyone else's. Crazy how that works. And you're shitting on the entire Yelp model--seeing how people use it to determine if they want to eat at a place before actually eating there.

Pretty funny to hear a  Metrosexual tell us WHAT IS cool.......then five years from now (when you get ball hairs) your living in Allen with three kids, and a wife!  POW. I detect indie hipster-grow up?  Please tell us what's cool.....please. Please.

Kergo 1 Spaceship

I detect employee.  Just because you throw a bunch old sh+t together, doesn't make it nice!  I once collected stuff from old farmhouses (we called it "farm hopping"), and filled my garage with said stuff, and know what, most of it was junk-get my point?  Well, most of it was junk, expect for the pics and letters from the 20's, and the rocking chair.  Then I collected fossils from creeks for years (creekhopping) -and guess what?  JUNK.  Except for the giant crustacean I pulled out of Rowlett Creek.

Get my point dude?

Kergie out.

One $10.00 Old Fashioned (or) 2 LOADED Whataburgers...........methinks WB wins out.  Don't waste your money NR.

true, but when the alternative was probably a contemporary looking ultra douche lounge it was going to get made fun of anyhow

Steve,    Make no bones about it; you are completely Lame, but this is funny, funny sh*t!  And so typical of Dallas.  Salute-sir.

ps-Did you go to "comment" school this week? I think we are fighting the same fight?

I don't know what everyone is whining about. It's a nice place. The food was good, the drinks were very good. It wasn't full of douchebags (unless you count the colleague dining with my wife and myself). The staff was nice. I'm glad they're in the neighborhood and I hope they're successful.

Yelp model is based on people who actually went there. So you and Kergie are just Trolls with opinions and I'm bringing my opinion back to joust with yours for being negative before you have any REAL information. Is it fun to tear stuff apart virtually?Just curious?

Rangers100

Anyway, Scruffy... it's a cool place.  And you're definitely cool enough to know how much Dallas north of Woodall sucks.

So check it out.  You'll like it.

Have you ever lived in a real city?  Do you have kids?  Do you even know where downtown Dallas is?

You bring up a very good point. I love an old fashioned, though. I bet I get both. I wonder if they'll let me slam some Whataburger at the bar.

Someone south of Woodall telling us what's cool. Now, this ought to be interesting and douchey!

I think it'll still attract the douchers...as that is what primarily roams these wastelands.

COA would never do a story on foodtrucks, or general douchery-NEVER?

Rangers100
Rangers100

Yeah, the last picture comes off looking dumb.  But if you'd ever met Lucky you'd quickly know the photo to be a good dude just joking around and not taking himself too seriously.

You should go because the place is cool, has great food and drinks, and downtown is a place that matters.  Unlike pretty much everything north of Woodall.

Scruffygeist
Scruffygeist

Yes.

Duh.

My "opinion" on this was vague and required linking a couple different things together. So either you keep up with my posts because you care and you love the Scruff or I'm just a convenient name to attack. Either way works.

Let's make my opinion clear. The build-out looks nice. The last picture makes me not want to give it a try, location being irrelevant. Whether that picture is representative or out-of-context, it still will get judged.

there is a difference in food truck stories by you and all others previous and that is, yours actually reviews the food, and doest just proclaim them the next douchebag trend in dallas.  Thanks to you, Ive been down to Flora St now to try a couple now whereas b4 the writers attitude about them kept me away

Bring on that food truck story.  If I recall, that food truck story that you did was ACTUALLY good.  I'm referring to the other 198 stories about food trucks that have made a home on this blog.

Why you hatin' on my food trucks still? That was so long ago. And another is about to post in about ten minutes. :)
