So Is Mac and Cheese A Black Thing?

Categories: Whimsy

Pat Robertson never ate mac and cheese at his Thanksgiving dinner, and after scratching my head deep in thought for the last three seconds, I'm pretty sure that I haven't either.

But Robertson's question of the dish as a Thanksgiving staple ("Is that a black thing?") along with the commentator's response ("The world needs to get on board with mac and cheese") has spurred a number of YouTube and blog responses, most skewering the conservative television mogul for not knowing what mac and cheese is.

I tend to think of mac and cheese as a prominently southern dish, its popularity untethered to skin color or social status. I grew up on it, even if it wasn't a prominent fixture on my Thanksgiving table. And I don't think Robertson intended to turn the dish into a racial divide but was perhaps lamenting the lack of oozy mac on his Thanksgiving table, too.

Either way, if loving mac and cheese is black I don't wanna be white.*

Don't think I've ever had mac and cheese at T-giving, but will give ya a big Hell Yeah for some cheese peas. Grandma's secret recipe: canned peas, a little velveeta and a bit of pimento..Viola ladies!

This turd nugget of a supposed leader of the christian fanatics never ceases to amaze me.  What a fucking disconnected, wing nut, homophobic, poster boy for dementia.  I thought he couldn't top his destruction of the US using Sodom and Gomorrah as his template.  Yet he has managed to find a way to fuck over the concept of pasta covered in dairy product.  I wish to fuck we had a window to hell, as rest assured he'll be there on his day of "judgement".  Fucking wack job.

I remember reading an article about some archeologist who found a box of Kraft Mac & Cheese at Plymouth.

Growing up, we never had mac 'n cheese for Thanksgiving. Nor did anyone else I know of. But, that was growing up in NY.Could mac 'n cheese (for Thanksgiving) be a Southern thing?

I am a big fan of mac and cheese, but I've never in my life had it at a Thanksgiving table.

I also still don't understand what Pat was asking.  Was he completely unfamiliar with the concept of mixing elbow macaroni with melted cheese, or did he just not see a place for it on Thanksgiving?  Neither answer could make me dislike him any more than I already do, but I can't figure it out.

I wanted to repost this from a story from yesterday; so we know how to be a lame commenter:

It also marks my first two curse words in nearly three years.  I think curse words are dumb, but this he/she got my gander up.......ENJOY:_____

I wish we were all as fucking smart, witty and charming as you-you motherfucking, smug queen!   I don't think any of us in here EVER remember anything credible you've brought to the table since we've been here.  Hey, think of us as The Vikings, and you as the natives we toss aside.  It's divide and conquer.....not "queen out" and cry>ps-I've been reading up on my viking history, so, I wanted to include that in a post-thanks just sayin'!Kergie Out.

I think maybe mac n cheese is only for non-assholes, which is probably why Pat Robertson is unfamiliar with it.

Considering Pat Robertson a credible source on ANYTHING is like paying attention to Skip Bayless when it comes to sports.

To me, people like him are proof God either doesn't exist or has one evil sense of humor.

Mac and cheese is race blind and awesome.

The greatness of Williams Chicken could be considered a black thing (I love WC!).......Tex Mex is a white thing.

We always have mac and cheese at thanksgiving and Christmas. Not everyone in the family eats green been casserole or yams, so it's a replacer.

Mac n' Cheese is an American thing.  Although my great Italian ancestors had a great version of said menu, that traveled (on the boat) from the old country!

By the way, Pat Robertson is a right wing freak!

Even though I am Americanized, as a Chicano, both my extended family (abuelos included) and Canadian wife have mac and cheese as a fixture at both Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Maybe its just a plain southern thing, but its damn good either way.

I grew up in Texas and we never had mac and cheese either for Thanksgiving. To me it seems quite redundant after all of the other starches available.

oh crap, that response was a retort to this drivel:

just sayin' 4 hours ago in reply to Sybils_BeaverNah, I just hate around 6 or so sportatorium commenters. Its never fun to watch people that are so sure that they are clever and funny bomb to the degree that you guys do. Unless we were all at Showtime at the Apollo. I wish the observer could hire a guy in a clown suit with a broom to sweep you morons off the page when he hears the booing.

Thanksgiving is a carbohydrate coma. Warm mushy bread isn't really ever eaten any time else, is it?

I've always found it's the folks that claim people need meds that are the most likely to partake.  Like that Pastor (Haggard?) that bashed the gays, all the while he has a whole lair of skinny boys.  POW.
