Dallas' Five Best Dishes To Eat In Front of Vegetarians

Categories: Best Of Dallas

Everyone's got the right to make their own decisions when it comes to food choices, so why not take the opportunity to show all your vegetarian friends that you made the right one by eating Dallas' most hedonistic protein dishes? Don't just eat meat but gorge on all the delicious animal parts you can.

These are City of Ate's five favorite such dishes, including our recent Best Of Dallas® winner for best dish to guiltily savagely eat in front of vegetarians. Get more of Dallas' best with our Best Of app, available for the Droid and the iPhone.

Smoke's Big Rib (pictured above)
There's no denying what's on your plate when you order this dish at Smoke. While flesh can be ground, molded, shaped and stuffed into a terrine to resemble any number of things, a bone is a bone, and this dish is straight up animal parts. Make baby cow noises while you pick up the rib and gnaw at it. Your friend will stay a vegetarian forever -- which means more meat for you.

The Grape Burger
Nothing says carnage like ground meat. Why not horrify your vegetarian friend with a massive burger topped by bacon? While brunching one weekend I watched a small child become frustrated while trying to manage what was a sizable hunk of beef. I think there were tears in her eyes. For extra gratuitous anti-vegification, order yours with extra pig strips.

Meddlesome Moth's Bone Marrow
If a large bone protruding from a huge hunk of tender braised meat isn't enough, why not split one with a band saw to expose delicious marrow? Perfectly roasted, marrow spreads like rich, unctuous butter, cut with the tangy zing of caper-laden salsa verde.

I nominate the duck at First Chinese BBQ.  The unique first impression of smoked whole ducks hanging in the entrance Chinatown style trumps all, unless you are at a STexas barbacoa BBQ and you get to see where the barbacoa comes from.

Are y'all on Smoke's payroll or are you drunk off your butt when you go there?  This place has to be the most over-hyped in Dallas today.  Smoke is no more than amateur hour in the smokehouse.

I challenge you to try one of the following brunch items in particular from SMOKE and then tell me it's over-hyped: 1) the smoked brisket and cornbread hash topped with a poached egg.2) The blueberry & ricotta pancakes with apricots.

All good choices, but the BIG RIB (if any food item deserves all-caps, it's this one) and Local's foie gras are particularly inspired.

I'm a big fan of the beef rib, used to get em at Sam's club..and smoke em up at the ranch.  When I'm just wanting one, I go to Cooper's over by Billy Bobs..best thing they have in there.  Each one weighs about a pound, run ya 10 bucks.  Good eats!

Not a huge fan on how one makes the Foie gras..but it's perty good.

Give me some of that there marrow too, but leave about a pound of meat on the outside to go along with it.

First off, that rib looks good!  I'm sure it'll set you back 30 bones, and require a down payment. Baker's Ribs has them for a decent price.  Now, you realize you can buy beef or pork ribs for a reasonable price, and cook em yourself-right?  OK. Everything else looks ok; the catfish may be a "bit much".  Foie gras-meh.........I rather not waste a meal or appetizer on it.

Let's See:-Foie gras or Steak-steak wins-Foie gras or Super Nacho's-SN's win-Foie gras or Campisi's Pizza-Pizza wins-Foie gras or Whataburger w/grilled jalapeno's-Burger wins

See!  I just can't envision myself plowing through the New York Times, and eating that sh$t.  I can't see myself going hiking and then whip out Foie gras........a stacked hoagie with banana peppers, yeah maybe.

Methinks no one really likes it, and that it smacks of phony elitism, and wanton snobbery.  Turn yer collar up Biff, and git on down to the Yacht Club for supper.  Don't  forget to tie that sweater around yer waist, you, you you ___    _____!

Two Completely Irrelevant Subjects That Crossed My Mind This Morning:

-The Greensheet.  Sorry Mr. Greensheet, I know your hanging on for dear life, but, who reads that rubbish other than geriatrics, and the homeless? And the homeless only read it cause it's free!  If I need a 1971 Vega, I can find one online.  Please quit running those annoying ads.

-Time Warner Cable-Need I say more?  My bill was up to close to $200.00-just for cable.  Now I  have Fios (lightning fast!) phone, internet and cable for a little over 100 bucks.........you do the math?  And I have NFL network, AND The Longhorn Network!

I'd agree with you that few people (probably?) hike up mountains, make camp, and then bust out a cheeseboard and foie gras--but no EFFING way to "no one really likes it." If you haven't had it, you gotta try it. It's better than steak. It's better than most things--for real.
