Dallas' Five Best Breakfasts

Categories: Best Of Dallas

Jackies.jpg
Before brunch, there was breakfast: an honest, no-frills meal that started the day at home, or at the diner, or, if you were lucky, at the taqueria around the corner. While brunch is all about the hangover cures, sobriety cures and wondering which J Crew shirt to wear, breakfast is an honest, working person's meal, meant to be consumed while shaking your head at the news.

I once thought breakfast culture was a dying phenomenon, relegated to insomniac old timers with nothing else to do before work. But I rarely found empty tables as I tooled around Dallas looking for interesting morning meals. The breakfast culture here is alive and well.

These are City of Ate's five favorites, including our recent Best of Dallas winner for Best Breakfast. Get more of Dallas' best with our Best Of app, available for the Droid and the iPhone.

Lucky's Cafe:
The neighborhood diner breakfast (pictured above)
Newspapers were folded like fans on every other table at Lucky's during my visit late one weekday morning, but the diner ushers in the next generation of breakfast goers as well, with diners thumbing story to story instead of flipping. Order up two eggs over easy, bacon and toast, and try to finish your coffee. The attentive staff will beat you with a top off every time.

Chicken and Waffles.jpg
Jonathon's Oak Cliff:
Best relaxed rural breakfast
Sure, Jonathon's is known for their weekend brunch, but there's something about the space that just feels breakfasty. Maybe I was just looking for another excuse to use the best chicken and waffles picture I've ever seen, but Tuesday though Thursday they serve up an honest breakfast in what feels a little like a country home.

Victorias.jpg
La Victoria's
Best breakfast served counter-side
There are only four stools at the small counter that frames the kitchen entrance at La Victoria's. When I stumbled in one weekday morning only one slot was open -- the others were filled with three ladies, all from the 'hood, and all catching up with Vicky, who served as half waitress, half best friend. The burrito pictured above is best when ordererd with chorizo, roasted poblanos and cheese, but it's the gordita that Tia, just two stools down, was snacking on that gave me serious plate envy.

Um, Market Diner on Harry Hines. It's the old-school real deal.

I only recommend All Good Cafe if you want to find out what it's like to be waited on by members of the Manson Family.

I much preferred "All Good Cafe" back when the building was home to "KJ's Koffee and the Donut Lady".

Of course that's also when Deep Ellum was still active and lively.

WTF? no breakfast list is complete absent a refrence to Bar-bec's

pretty good picks, but i'm surprised Cindi's isn't listed here! i know they are a popular brunch spot, but you can't beat their breakfast. homemade corned beef hash, delicious cheese blintzes, hearty omelettes, and some of the best homefries i've ever tasted make this one of my favorite go-to spots for a satisfying breffast.

This list lost all credibility whe John's was not on it. By far the best breakfast. Get the breakfast special or the gyro omelet.

Taco Joint? Really? And All Good? The service there is terrrrrrrrible! Why not Circle Grill? Or John's on Greenville? Or Rosita's over on Oates? Or Barbec's? What's wrong with you?

The best part of breakfast out on a Sunday morning is seeing a guy in sweats and a ball cap with a girl who's wearing...what she obviously had on Saturday night.  Oh, the Breakfast of Shame...

While I can't comment on any breakfast joints in Big D other than Kirby's ..pretty good, little overrated..people watching is fun though.  I will do y'all a favor and let you in on the best damn breakfast in the Westoplex:

Ol South pancake house in the town of the Cow..order the German, get two sides of sausage (patties of course) chop that sausage up, and when the waiter/tress brings out the German and opens it up to add the lemon juice..slide that whole plate of prepared sausage up in there too!!!and then have them close it up..and then you can begin partaking in the BEST breakfast foodstuff in all of the Great state of Tejas!

Nah, Kirby's is more of a brunch place.

Gold Rush--good all around breakfast.  Semi-hip if you have a date.

El Taquito (E Grand just N of 30) Exquisite breakfasts and BYOB.  Best menudo I have found so far, good barbacoa, caldo, eggs every which way including with pork chops.

Waffle House.  Chili on scrambled eggs.  NW Highway/35 location (along with its IHOP neighbor), has an astounding late night clientele)

Not in Dallas, but Poor Richard's makes the best breakfast in Plano. Hands down.

Denise,    Excellent excellent point!  Poor Richard's is greatness.........and that view of Aldi's is really one of a kind. That Southern Maid donut shop on that corner is also seriously good.

Southern Maid is probably the most underrated donut around.

Lone Star Donuts are great.  The eclairs are packed full of bavarian cream!

Amanda Norris

Really? I tried it once on a recommendation, and the donuts tasted stale, gummy and flavorless, and the filled ones barely had a tiny drop of filling. But I keep hearing how great Southern Maid is. Maybe I just caught them on a terrible day or something?

Aparicio's in east Plano makes killer breakfast tacos. And you can't do a Top 5 breakfasts before sampling Smoke's pancakes.

It's hard to beat a Chick-fil-A chicken biscuit or a Whataburger Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit though. Cue the elitist snobs shitting on anything close to fast food and chain.

Buckeye

And don't forget to get your holiday tamales at Aparicio's.  Good stuff.  They have an order form at their website.

Kergo 1 Spaceship

What about Breakfast Jack's?  Add some tabasco.......jalapeno's.  AND cheap!  The Whataburger breakfast taquito is a very good bit o' nosh.

Kergo 1 Spaceship

APARICIO'S is also yum!  I prefer dinner at said locale.

I usually would shit on any fast food breakfast, BUT.... Chick-fil-A's spicy chicken biscuit is so freaking delicious!

It's okay to shit on "Chik-Fil-A", I mean they shit on the LGBT community, so fair is fair.

No bitching about the list, just a question. Are you required to include the word 'best'?

And they always have rubbery overcooked eggs and wimpy salsa.

What about Tony's Cafe on Alma, in Plano?  You know, some of us don't live in that stinky mess ya'll call Dallas.  Although I'm thinking about turning Metrosexual next year, and getting a Beemer.  Ahhhh, Tollway Trash, city douchers, and flaccid trendsters....you know what, eff it, I'm heading to Texoma to hike.  Ya'll almost drew me offsides.

todd

I love me some Lebanese Breafast Burritos from Tony's.  No, food nerds, they aren't au-then-tic.  But the egg and cheese and meat and potatoes are mixed in awesomey goodness with an earthy spice combo.  Generously folded into tortillas and served with salsa.  Order one, you'll wish you had a second.  Order two, you'll need bigger pants.

Where is Tony's?

Kergo 1 Spaceship

Tony's is at the intersection of Spring Creek and Alma, in the northeast corner....three doors down from Domino's, and one door down from the dentist. Other great tenants;

Your answer is in the title dude...Dallas' Five Best Breakfasts.

Kergo 1 Spaceship
Kergo 1 Spaceship

Yeah, but most people that can AFFORD breakfast actually live outside the city. I think it means the Dallas area, with a bent on yuppie snobbery. And food elitism. Fake food people suck!

Kergo 1 Spaceship
Kergo 1 Spaceship

I may in fact hike. Let's review 140 in Dallas proper have some money.....4,500, 231 live in abject poverty.  Nuff said?

LesliO

I live in Dallas and can happily afford breakfast for not only myself, but my daughter too.  Not sure why people like you continue to try and pit urban dwellers and suburban dwellers against each other with your own brand of snobby pretentiousness.  Take a hike Kergo - like you said you were going to.

My favorite is, Original House of Pancakes. Comfortable seating. Good service. Turkey link sausages in natural casing and perfectly poached eggs with great home fries. Their hash however is, meh.Very safe, too! There's always at least 4-6 cops eating breakfast when I'm there.I'd go to Lucky's more often but all they offer in the way of sausage is patties and, I prefer natural links. Especially when I can get  (turkey) links at OHP.

I know that People Love Lists, but I cannot for the life of me fathom how a dude who's lived here for less than a season has been to enough places to list the fucking Top 5 of anything.

I don't think you know the top 5 parking spaces at your job yet.   Or the Top 5 Ways to Work.   Or the Top 5 Local News Affiliates.   Or the Top 5 Newspapers......

Kergo 1 Spaceship

And he rides a bike, which limits him to a five mile radius.

Seconded. I keep reading these Top 5's even though I know they'll be crap. Dude can't go to half a dozen places and call the tops.

ConnectiveTissue

Y'all are awfully grouchy. Even if he'd been here for 50 years, do you think he'd have gone to EVERY place in town that serves breakfast? A list like this is necessarily the "Top 5 [fill in the blank] That Scott Reitz Has Eaten In His Relatively Short Time In Dallas." Which is just fine: we're talking about breakfast, not how to bring peace to the Middle East. Now, go get something to eat; it'll settle your stomach.

Record Grill, corner of Elm and Record downtown. Some quality, greasy spoon diner breakfast. Give it a try the next time you have jury duty
