Oak Cliff's Blues, Bandits & BBQ 2nd Annual Cook-Off is Calling All Cooks

BluesBanditsBBQ.jpg
Okay, kids. We're gonna do this thing in a couple weekends and I'm gonna need a good showing. Plan accordingly.

The 2nd Annual Blues, Bandits & BBQ cook-off in Oak Cliff is on October 22 from noon to 6 p.m. Not only should you plan on heading out for some good tunes and food, if you find yourself to be pretty handy with meat, consider registering as a competitor.

"We'd love to let people know we're still accepting teams for the BBQ cook-off," says organizer Rob Shearer. "We will finalize the teams on Friday, October 14 at 5 p.m., so there's still a week to make plans and join in the fun."

Categories include beef brisket, pork ribs, whole chicken, sausage and pulled pork. The rregistration page is where it starts.

There are also a select number of tickets for the People's Choice Tasting event (based on the number of cook-off entrants), which will run from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. This is a way to taste all of the competitors' handiwork and have your say in what a good rib really is (spicy rub, sauce on the side, cooked low and slow).

If you attended last year's event, take note there have been a few changes. First of all, the location this year is Lake Cliff Park, making it a bit more family-friendly and allowing for more space for the BBQ teams and live music. And whereas last year all of the competitors had to use grass-fed and sustainable beef, this year it's anything goes for all the categories.

In addition to the cook-off, there will also be some local restaurants at the event.

"Lockhart Smokehouse will have barbecue," Shearer says. "There will also be several other options, including both Mainstream Fish Camp and Spiral Diner. So, you can be a veggie lover and attend this event."

Local musicians are set to hit the stage at high noon, starting with youngster Tallan Latz, followed by Kirby Kelly, Hunter Hendrickson, Andres Tinker, Lance Lopez and headliner Bobby Patterson.

General admission tickets via PreKindle are $10 in advance, or $15 the day of. Kids 12 and younger are free, and the People's Choice Tasting between 2 and 4 p.m. is an additional $15.

Ms.DD's, Can I drink beer at the cookoff? If so, I may load up the Webber Bullet with a few slabs of pork ribs(spare/baby back), maybe some brisket also, and welcome the sporties to join. Anything outside of cooking the aforementioned and I'm SOL.

How many members in this thing make a team? My bad, found it, one cook plus 4 helpers max.

And we're not too picky on how many you've got on your team... but you only get free admission for the core group of 1 + 4. And we will have cold keg beer flowing all weekend from our friends at Lockhart Smokehouse.

Is Sonny Bryan coming?

No, JJ - we just want good BBQ. But Lockhart Smokehouse will be selling BBQ in addition to the sampling you can get from the BBQ teams competing.

Funny, but inaccurate. The reason I didn't get any likes is because clearly nobody gives a rats ass about this post. That was the whole point idiot.

Harsh, bro.

Didn't your momma teach you any manners?  It's not polite to rip on a lady that way.  Crawl back in your hole, little man.

Sorry, Kergo, but your Blues list is acoustically slanted.  Adding in the Kings of Electric Blues:  BB King, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Freddie King and SRV.

Lauren, where's your pic? You don't even have one yet? Obviously you're not high enough on the totem pole yet or you're just too lazy to do it. You'll get there someday. Also, your name is way too long. That middle name is just unnecessary.

Chuck. That's harsh! Geesh. Why aren't you watching the game anyway? Where are you guys blogging? I have some foodie questions... And, I don't need sympathy comments. I feel secure with my words. I'preciate the thought though.
