Gorditas Doña Tota Opens in Dallas

Gorditas Doña Tota
Gorditas Doña Tota is a chain restaurant out of Mexico that serves, you guessed it, gorditas, and just yesterday they opened their northern-most restaurant on Jefferson Boulevard in Oak Cliff. It all began more than 50 years ago when Carlota Murillo started selling her homemade street sandwiches out of a cart in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, and now there are more than 100 restaurants in Mexico and a handful in Texas.

The gorditas are served stuffed with one of 12 different stews, including pork mole, Yucatán-style chicken, beans and cheese and ground beef stew. Prices start at just $1.30 each. Reviews from down south generally have the same tone: very tasty, annoyingly addictive and dirt-cheap.

With so many locally owned Mexican favorites throughout the city, it will be interesting to see how this chain competes.

You know, compared to these CoA bloggers, RW was the hardest working man in show business.  He was required to mail in three blogs a day.  The 400 people they have blogging over here seem to be required to cut and paste something once or maybe twice a day.  That being said, Alice still rocks.....so far....

Big gordita lover here, I'm from San Antonio so I know more than most of you gringos.

I hate the way Taco Bell bastardizes mexican items, from gorditas, to chalupas, to pretty much everything. Gorditas are best served inside a small puffy corn tortilla with seasoned beef, chicken, or pork and topped with a little lettuce and tomato, refried beans, and it has to be greasy. If you're ever in San Antonio during Fiesta, make sure to grab one. I can't remember the name of the famous ones though. Gorditas means "little fat ones"... damn I'm hungry.

This isn't even an effing review...WTF is this?

Let me try:

Ventured over near the historic Stockyards yesterday with some out of town friends. They wanted some authentic Mescun food so I suggested El Matate (espanol for: We only have Mexican TV channels, methinks).

We all ordered the barbacoa gordita platas...when the piping hot gorditas arrived.we were delighted to find them stuffed to the top with Barbacoa..a little shredded lettuce..(I prefer cabbage) and one half slice of tomatoe.  When accompanied with their wickedly caliente green sauce, it was a concerto of Mescun fusion on our plates.

Three thumbs up, bring your own reading material if'n you dont read espanol.

Is this a review or cut/paste job? It is scary leaving uptown?

I'll get some of those critters, but I don't want to be outside of a 50radius of my Kholer industrial.

I'd suggest you not talk nasty about Alice. I'd hate to turn ugly up in here.

You bet.  Quite the breath of fresh air from foodies bitching about sustainable, farm to table, and all other flavors of the month.

real honest Mexican street food is hard to pass up. If you are the only one in the place that can speak Ingles, it is usually a pretty good sign. "Dos, numero catorce, por favor" pass the salsa and another beer.

I gain about 10lbs each year during NIOSA. Then lose it all the next day when I puke all over the hotel room.

I'm kind of amazed at most of these writers. Scared to venture north of 635 yet always going on about Deep Ellum or Oak Cliff.
